The Crime Victims Fund (CVF) is the primary source of funding for services that support survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child sexual abuse, trafficking, and other crimes. Yet today, the CVF is dangerously low, putting critical, lifesaving services and victims’ lives at risk.

For New Mexico, the continued destabilization of VOCA directly impacts programs. We are already seeing Children's Advocacy Centers and Sexual Assault Service Programs experience cuts. These cuts put access to critical services at risk for survivors across the state.

The Crime Victims Fund Stabilization Act ( ) offers a bipartisan, commonsense solution to stabilize the CVF using non-taxpayer dollars, ensuring continuity of services while Congress works toward a long-term fix.

The House unanimously passed the bill, and now, it’s time for the Senate to do the same!

We know that comprehensive sexual health education is sexual violence prevention, yet too many of students in New Mexico don't have access to this essential information.

Nearly 1 in 10 students in New Mexico reported being sexually assaulted. The impact of this type of violence is life long and affects everything from physical health to financial stability to emotional well being.

Right now there are programs across the state doing life saving prevention education in their areas but the current funding isn't enough to reach every student.

We know what works!
In the areas it is happening, sexual violence prevention education is changing young people's beliefs and behaviors.
Data also shows that comprehensive sexual violence education also helps prevent violence by teaching students about boundaries and healthy relationships and giving them the tools to communicate and to reach out for help if they are harmed!

We believe every student in New Mexico deserves comprehensive, age appropriate, inclusive sexual health education to help them live safe and healthy lives!

Survivors deserve care not punishment! Yet too often survivors of color are criminalized for defending themselves.
Today, we wanted uplift Keshia Golden's story and join the call for justice for her.

Keshia is a Black mother in Illinois and survivor of domestic violence. After reaching out for help nearly 50 times, Keshia, who was 8 months pregnant, defended herself which resulted in the death of her abusive partner.

Facing a trial for 1st Degree Murder, Keshia recently made the difficult choice as a mother to take a plea deal with 2 years probation. Now Keisha has the label of “convicted felon” for something she should never have been charged with.

Her story is one that is a painfully familiar one for Black, brown, and Indigenous women and femmes. Survivors are often told to “fight back” or criticized for how they respond. Yet when survivors defend themselves, especially survivors of color, they are often criminalized and punished.

We know that prisons and jails are full of survivors. 69% all people in New Mexico who were ever incarcerated have experienced sexual assault or domestic violence. Some survivors are incarcerated because they were criminalized for self defense. Others are there because of the ways trauma impacted their lives.

We affirm that there is no “right” way to survive domestic and sexual violence.
We stand will ALL survivors

Survivors of color deserve to be believed the first time they seek help.
Survivors of color deserve care and empathy, not criminalization.
Survivors of color deserve systems that put them at the center of what justice and healing look like.

Last week NMCSAP was at the National Sexual Assault Conference!

We loved getting to connect with people across the country doing amazing work and share some of the ways that New Mexico is leading the way in policy, survivor centered decision making, services, and much more.

We were also honored to see New Mexico based advocate Anushah Jiwani during her presentation on Restorative Justice. Survivors deserve options on how justice and healing look for them and Anushah is such a powerful voice in educating on how this can look for survivors.
