Today, we honor the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a landmark civil rights law that transformed American democracy by prohibiting racial discrimination in voting and helping protect the fundamental right to cast a ballot.

Its passage was the result of generations of advocacy and the courage of people who organized, marched and demanded equal access to the ballot box.

Here in New Mexico, the fight for an inclusive democracy continues. Our stateโ€™s diverse communities reminds us that protecting access to the ballot means ensuring every eligible voter can participate and every voice can be heard.

The Voting Rights Act is more than history. It is a reminder that democracy depends on participation.

Stay informed. Stay engaged. Make a plan to vote. Support your community. Together, we strengthen our democracy, one voice, one vote and one election at a time.
