HUGE NEWS FOR OHIO!

WHAT DOES A JEW LOOK LIKE?

Lately there has been a great deal of conversation about the complexion and appearance of Jews—both today and throughout history. Some have even suggested that Israelis should have to take DNA tests to prove their legitimacy and connection to the promises made to Abraham.

That fundamentally misses the point.

The Jewish people have never been defined by racial purity or by a DNA test. Israel is a people—a tribal nation bound together by covenant.

Abraham himself was not born into a Jewish home. Hashem called him out from among the peoples and entered into covenant with him. That covenant stands at the beginning of a story recognized in Jewish Scripture, Christian Scripture, and, quite famously, even in the Qur’an.

We say in the blessing over the Torah:

ASHER BACHAR BANU MIKOL HA’AMIM—“Who chose us from among all the peoples.”

There are two ways of hearing those words. One is: “Of all the peoples, Hashem chose us.” But they can also be heard quite literally: “Hashem chose us from among all the peoples.”

Israel is a people gathered from among peoples.

And this is not merely theoretical. Whether you believe that Messiah has already been born or are still waiting for his arrival, the biblical story of the Davidic line itself famously includes women who were not born into Israel but entered and became part of the people. Ruth is perhaps the clearest example:

“Your people shall be my people, and your G-d my G-d.”

The Qur’an preserves the ancient connection between the Children of Israel and the land. Moses tells Israel:

“O my people, enter the Holy Land which Allah has assigned to you.” (Qur’an 5:21)

Being the “chosen people” was never a claim that one race of human beings possesses superior blood. The covenant is a responsibility—a yoke to be carried. And throughout Jewish history, someone who enters that covenant according to its laws becomes part of Israel.

None of this means that Jewish communities have always lived up perfectly to these principles. Historically, and even today, darker-skinned Jews and converts have sometimes encountered suspicion or discrimination because of their appearance.

Today we also encounter the accusation in the opposite direction. Fair-skinned Jews—and particularly Ashkenazi Jews—are sometimes told that their appearance proves that they cannot really be descended from ancient Israelites. One common version of the accusation is that Ashkenazi Jews are actually descendants of converts from the medieval Khazar kingdom.

But before debating the historical merits of that accusation, notice the fundamental problem with the argument:

EVEN IF THE KHAZARS HAD CONVERTED TO JUDAISM, CONVERSION WOULD NOT INVALIDATE THEIR PLACE WITHIN THE JEWISH PEOPLE.

Israel is a tribal and covenantal people with its own laws governing who belongs to the community and how someone from outside may enter it.

Ruth was not an impostor because she was born a Moabite. Her descendants include the house of David.

And if someone still believes that fair skin or particular facial features are somehow incompatible with ancient Israelite ancestry, consider the Samaritans.

The Samaritans are a distinct community. The Jewish and Samaritan communities have famously been at odds with one another since antiquity—a disagreement stretching back long before the time of Messiah and continuing, in various forms, for thousands of years. The Samaritan priesthood nevertheless preserves an ancient tradition of descent from Aaron, the brother of Moses, with its present priestly house tracing its paternal line through Aaron’s son Ithamar which is recognized by the Jewish community as well.

Look at the Samaritan Kohen pictured below.

Imagine putting this same man in an “I ❤️ NY” ball cap and placing him behind the counter of a kosher deli.

Would his appearance strike you as unusual?

I don’t believe it would.

By appearance alone, he could walk unnoticed through a crowd in virtually any Jewish community. Nothing about his complexion or facial features announces that he belongs to a separate community of Kohanim preserving an ancient lineage which has remained in the Land of Israel from biblical times.

Dark skin does not make someone more authentically Israelite. Fair skin does not make someone less authentically Israelite.

Israel has never had one face, one complexion, or one genetic profile.

“Over here, everybody’s calling it a miracle.”

Chris Mitchell, Middle East Bureau Chief for CBN News, on the FlyDubai flight where the copilot attacked the pilot and tried to crash the passenger jet. Through a series of heroic events, tragedy was averted.

“On the plane, people started praying what’s called the Shema… so there was, they felt, divine intervention in this incident.”
