🐓 Round Barn - Arcadia, OK

Built in 1898, the Arcadia Round Barn is one of the last true round barns in the country — and it almost didn’t survive to see Route 66’s centennial.

William Odor built this barn round on purpose — he believed a round barn couldn’t be blown down by Oklahoma wind, since there were no flat sides for it to push against.

By the 1980s, the barn was rotting and close to collapse. A local carpenter named Luke Robison, then in his 70s, led the volunteer effort to save it, using hand-bent laminated wood to reconstruct the domed roof.

Today it sits right on Route 66 in Arcadia, Oklahoma — a two-story hayloft, a dance floor upstairs, and a gift shop below, still standing more than 125 years later.

This stretch of old Route 66 sits at the crossroads of Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi homelands — over a thousand Native American artisans work in this region today, turning silver, turquoise, wool, and clay into pieces that end up on wrists and walls around the world. Long before the Mother Road brought tourists through, this was already trading ground. When Route 66 came through town in the 1920s, the trading posts followed the traffic, lining Main Street to meet travelers headed west. Some of them are still family-run, still doing business the way they did a century ago. Richardson’s Trading Post has stood since 1913. It’s not alone. Places like Perry Null and Ellis Tanner have spent generations building relationships with artisans on a system called pawn — credit extended on trust, backed by rugs and jewelry as collateral.

Walk into any of these posts today and you’ll find the same thing: a counter, a scale, and a dealer who can tell you which family made which belt buckle just by looking at the stampwork.
