Raising Spirits in Revolutionary Times: An Immersive Tavern Night
Host: Michael Carver, the Regimental Brewmeister Outside of the church, the tavern was the most important institution in most towns. Taverns were used as meeting places for political assemblies and business; places to share news, swap stories, and spread ideas; the site of travel crossroads and community-building. Strangers and neighbours alike came together in these common spaces. It was in the colonial tavern that the revolutionary spirit launched our nation....

MAGA’s War on Freedom of Religion
The Trump Administration is on a mission to vandalize our national parks, museums, and cultural institutions, stripping all mentions of black history and slavery (as well as mentions of Native Americans, Jews, Muslims, and other minorities) from our public celebrations and monuments about American History. Beyond the obvious racist, white supremacist, anti-American, hate inspired politics of the MAGA party, this represents a fundamental problem with one of our most sacred national institutions – Freedom of Religion....

David Rittenhouse’s Orreries
An orrery is a mechanical model of the solar system, demonstrating the motions of the planets and their satellites around the sun. Orreries were regarded as essential teaching equipment for 18th-century lectures on “natural philosophy” (the physical sciences). Such apparatus became popular from around 1700, when John Rowley built one for patron the Charles Boyle, the fourth Earl of Orrery in Ireland....

David Rittenhouse’s Thermometer
In 1767, the American astronomer and mathematician David Rittenhouse (1732-1796) described a pocket thermometer that contained a bimetallic mechanism. Bimetallic or deformation thermometers depended on different expansion rates of two metal strips set into a curl. As the temperature changed, the curvature of the metal curls also changed and moved a pointer along a marked temperature scale. Rittenhouse was studying the variations in the oscillations of the pendulum, caused by the expansion and contraction of the material of which it is made. ...

David Rittenhouse’s Hygrometer
Wood swells and shrinks about 80 times as much around the growth rings relative to the same section of wood along the length of the fiber. This causes wood of certain cuts to warp when exposed to high humidity. As a clockmaker, this phenomenon greatly frustrated David Rittenhouse so he sought to understand it. Taking two identically sized strips of mahogany and gluing them together so that the grains of one side of the slab are perpendicular to the grain of the other, Rittenhouse built a device that moved as the ambient humidity in the air changed....
