The Seven Dwarfs costumes at Disneyland’s opening had lifeless arms that just hung there because the performers had no control over them. So instead they wiggled their tongues and noses to show emotion.

In 2022 the original E.T. animatronic showed up at auction completely skinless. No silicone, no costume, just 85 points of articulation and pure mechanical horror staring back at you. It sold for 2.56 million.

The original Dumbo costume needed two people inside and when they added vision holes all over it for Disneyland’s opening it somehow got worse.

Someone in Austin Texas built an animatronic head in 1989 with silver hand forged eyes, black silicone lips and a natural root for a brain. It can talk. It can sing.

Legacy Effects made Grogu. They also made Chuckesmee. A Twilight baby animatronic so horrifying that the actors couldn’t keep it together on set and the director himself called it one of the most grotesque mistakes they ever made. It lives in a museum in Forks now and people say it’s haunted. Make that make sense.

At Disneyland’s opening in 1955 Donald Duck had a screen where you could literally see the person’s face inside staring back at you. Disney had no costumes so they borrowed these from Ice Capades.

The scariest part of this water slide is not the slide. It’s being in the pool after. Six giant snake heads with their mouths open staring down at you while you swim. Yas Waterworld has been doing this to people for over a decade.

Stan Winston built a shark human hybrid suit with animatronic eyes for a 1998 TV movie and the performer wore it underwater. Your brain can’t decide if it moves like a person or a machine because it’s both. And the scariest shot has no monster at all, just a sealed metal pod sinking to the bottom of the ocean with something alive inside.

Most submechanophobia hits by accident. This one was designed from the ground up to destroy you. Poison Props built the Toxic Tub knowing exactly what they were doing and we respect and fear them for it.
