Some common veggies you might encounter at farmers markets across Alaska might be unfamiliar. Using your Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program benefits or Fresh Bucks to purchase these is a good way of trying something new that might become a family favorite!
Radish – A root vegetable that’s crisp and tastes peppery, and good for digestion. Eat these raw whole or sliced in a salad, roasted or try pickling them!
Radicchio – A leafy vegetable that looks very similar to red cabbage but has a bitter and spicy taste. Great source of vitamin K and folate. Eat these raw in a salad/sandwich or roast them.
Rhubarb – A tart, stalky vegetable with inedible leaves that MUST be cooked. Really great for bone strength. After cutting off the leaves and cubing, simmer with some sugar to create a tart and sweet compote! Ask the farmer their favorite way to have them for new ideas!

At WIC, we believe breastfeeding parents should be able to feed their babies or toddlers (or pump/hand express milk!) at work, school, and in public with respect and support. 💖
It’s time to break the stigma against public breastfeeding. Luckily, the law is on your side, empowering you to breastfeed when and where you need to! 🤱

Turn fruits and veggies into fun shapes and characters! Use cookie cutters to create animal shapes out of melon slices or arrange sliced fruits into smiley faces on a plate. 🍽️
Getting your little ones to play with food is a great way of exploring sensory play! This can help prevent picky eating, build motor skills, and encourage brain development! 🧠

On your next family walk, try this craft! Get some painter’s tape, or any thick tape you have around, and create a bracelet on your non dominant hand. Have some help to wrap it around with the sticky side facing outwards. Then, on your walk everyone can pick flowers, grass, sticks, or weeds to create a pattern!
A good rule for flowers is to only pick if there are more than 10 of them in one area. Try only finding things of one color or create patterns on your bracelet. Anchorage has a ton of parks and playgrounds with plenty of beautiful summer finds.
