⛔️ The false “emergency” to rush the proposed West Susitna Industrial Access Road for non-Alaskan and foreign-owned gold mining claims is a threat to Alaska's public lands. The comment period for the road is only three weeks, ending Oct. 13.

Between September 12th and September 19th, draggers have bycaught nearly 1,000 Chinook salmon, 8,615 chums, 1,114 individual crabs, over 90,000 pounds of herring and 82,533 pounds of halibut.
Because 119% of the herring bycatch has been taken and is over the limit, the Winter Savings Area is closed starting today through March 1, 2027. Herring continue to be bycaught even after the cap has been met. The North Pacific Fishery Management Council will be considering doubling or even tripling this limit at their February Council meeting.

The Tongass is one of the most incredible places on the planet — and so much of what makes this place amazing comes down to wild salmon.
Let's build a future full of wild fish that help to drive sustainable, locally led economies.

"Public lands — it's how we make our living. If not, it's how we raise our kids.
If we lose our public lands, we're losing so much of our identity, and our culture, and what makes us Alaskans."

There's "no Indigenous knowledge" on the causes of salmon declines. Shockingly, that's what a fisheries scientist recently claimed in an academic article.
Two of the four authors of the academic article this scientist was responding to are Alaska Natives.
It defies belief that after decades of testimony on this topic, multiple times of year, from hundreds of Alaska Native Tribal leaders and citizens, as well as decades of advocacy, someone perceived as knowledgeable about this issue can claim that there is "no Indigenous knowledge" on this topic, or that there is "no Indigenous knowledge" represented in an academic article authored, in part, by Indigenous people. As lead author social scientist Anna Lavoie, Alaska Native leader and lifelong fisherman Brooke Woods, Cup'ig salmon advocate Jackie Arnaciar Boyer, and SalmonState communications director Mary Catharine Martin wrote in a response to his comment:
"Until Indigenous knowledge is treated as equally valid for fisheries management, not as anecdotal supplements to Western data, the salmon crisis will continue, and so will the harm to Alaska Native communities."
