THIS IS WHAT COMMUNITY LOOKS LIKE.
folks: WE DONATED OVER 2,300LBS OF VEG!
Last week, as the river rose, Bloom Co-Director, Anna harvested Bloom’s 5 community gardens to fill local food boxes and donate fresh produce to Park Place Community Center.
550 pounds harvested.
Then came Monday.
Parts of our beloved Community Farm were underwater from the rain, while other areas were deep in mud. Hundreds of pounds of produce were at risk of being lost within days.
We put out an emergency call for help.
Within an hour, about 30 people showed up. Bloom staff, volunteers, partners, and community members jumped in, and in ONE HOUR, together we harvested approximately 1,800 pounds of vegetables.
Our friends from Meadowbrook on Main jumped straight into the deep mud and helped get produce to a local pantry. We saw friends from Anderson Community Schools, the Health Department, Community Hospital Anderson and throughout our community grabbing bins and getting to work.
That food went directly to The Salvation Army, Park Place Community Center, Operation Love, Pete’s Pantry, Trinity Episcopal Church, and local food boxes.
Last night, our Bloom team turned our Farm to Table class into a free dinner for families and individuals displaced by the flood. We served roasted veggie orzo with feta made with vegetables harvested from the farm just hours earlier, alongside homemade bread donated by Hodge Family Farm. Additional meals and bread went to Rangeline and The Salvation Army.
We’re thankful for our friends and farmers, Mikkal Hodge and Mindy Carver, and for our partnership with Community Hospital Anderson Foundation that makes this space and so much of our work possible.
More than 2,300 pounds of fresh food harvested during a historic flood.
We are in awe of the amount of people in our community ready to step up and HELP. Facebook is not letting me tag- ahhh. But seriously, there is so much noise on social media disparaging our home all. the. time. and to see the actions of sooooo many individuals, businesses, and organizations rise so far above, is just inspiring. Please keep looking for ways to help your neighbors. Here are a bunch of photos from the the big pick, but I don't think it even captures all of our helpers. THANK YOUUU
Love, Olivia
