This is a long one, buckle up.
You just brought an 8-week-old German Shepherd as your first-ever dog. (Did you research the breed first?) He’s got sharp little teeth and is leaving marks all over you—are you really shocked that he bites? That’s like bringing home a German Shepherd puppy and leaving a one-star review because it ate your shoes, redecorated your living room, and decided your backyard needed a few new holes. Oh, and just a warning… it digs too. 😂

“He’s attacking me!” — He’s a teething German Shepherd puppy learning how to use his mouth… kind of like a toddler learning what they can and can’t put their hands on.

Will this puppy herd your kids at some point? 😂 Chasing them from room to room, circling the yard, cutting them off when they try to run… like, “Excuse me, little human. The flock stays together.” And let’s be real—maybe your dog needs a job! This is a herding breed, after all! If your German Shepherd starts inventing his own job, you might want to give him something productive to do before he decides the children, the cat, and the neighbor’s squirrel are all part of his daily assignment. 😂

Doing your research means spending time with experienced handlers who have lived with, trained, and worked with this breed—not just reading about the breed online.

Puppies need structure, naps, mental stimulation, plenty of appropriate things to chew, consistency, and a human who knows what they’re doing. You’ve only had him home for a couple of weeks, he’s barely 10 weeks old, and somehow… he’s already running the household! Start learning early and enroll in a good puppy manners class—you’ll learn how to guide him into becoming a well-mannered, confident dog and a good citizen out in the world. Don’t wait until your puppy is out of the critical socialization window to start training and socializing—those weeks matter.

Be consistent with potty training! Puppies need to go outside frequently—and no, that’s not an exaggeration. 😂 Outside after a nap, outside after breakfast, lunch, and dinner, outside after playtime, outside when they wake up in the morning… outside, outside, OUTSIDE! Consistency is key. Take them out often, praise them when they go in the right place, and don’t wait for them to figure it out on their own. At this point, you may just decide to live outside until your puppy is potty trained. 😂🌳

This post isn’t meant to discourage you from getting a puppy—we all started with our first German Shepherd. ❤️ Go into it knowing what to expect, surround yourself with experienced handlers and trainers, and have the right guidance in place from the start to set you and your puppy up for success!

Questions to ask yourself?
1. Am I prepared for biting, chewing, and teething?
2. Do I have a training plan from day one?
3. Am I prepared to properly socialize my puppy?
4. Do I have enough time for daily training and mental stimulation?
5. Am I prepared for the ongoing costs of food, vet care, training, and emergencies?
6. Is everyone in the household prepared to follow the same rules?
7. Do I have access to a good trainer or experienced dog people when I need help?
8. Am I prepared for the reality that this is a commitment for many years—not just a cute puppy phase?

Puppy for Christmas? Think twice! A puppy shouldn’t be a last-minute surprise or impulse purchase. The exception? You’ve planned for it, been talking with the breeder for months, and are completely prepared for the puppy to come home at Christmas. ❤️

Puppies are a lifelong commitment—not a gift to return when the excitement wears off. Let’s not add to our already full animal shelters.

And one more thing… do you know how to spell Shepherd? 😂
It’s SHEPHERD. Not Shepard. Not Sheppard. Not Shephard. 😆

If you’re bringing home a German Shepherd, you might as well learn how to spell the breed you’re about to talk about for the next 10+ years. 😂

The End.
