The Importance of Individualized Test Prep

Every student has unique strengths, weaknesses, learning styles, and goals. By tailoring instruction to meet these individual needs, I ensure that each student receives the support and guidance necessary to excel.

Here are some key components of my individualized approach:

Assessment of Skills: I begin by assessing each student’s current knowledge and skills. This helps identify areas for improvement and allows us to set realistic, achievable goals.

Customized Study Plans: Based on the assessment, I create a personalized study plan that focuses on the specific subjects and skills that need attention. This plan is flexible and can be adjusted as the student progresses.

Diverse Learning Materials: I utilize a variety of resources, including online practice tests, interactive exercises, and specifically created materials, not a package of pre-made materials.

If your student was impacted by yesterday's tech issues at the ACT exam administration, here are a couple of tips for how to reset and get ready for their reschedule date.

- Take a day or two to regroup.

- Do some review of grammar rules and math skills to keep those fresh.

- Remind them that they were ready for yesterday and will be ready for their rescheduled exam.

A few tips for students taking the ACT next Saturday, July 11:

1. On the ACT science section, try skimming the questions first and then using your scanning skills to quickly identify where you will find the information you need to answer each question.

2. On ACT short answer questions, grammar or math, use the answers to help you narrow down to the correct answer. At least one answer will be obviously wrong to you, making it easier to focus on the correct one.

3. For vocabulary questions that give words you don't know in the answers, use process of elimination first. If the one answer you can't exclude is one you don't know, you still need to choose it. One answer has to be correct.

4. Ideally, you want to finish each ACT test section with one or two minutes left. If you have more time and are missing more questions than you like, slow down and read more.

Families ask, "my student has already taken the SAT or ACT and wants to improve their score. Can you help?"

Working with students who have already taken the test and are looking for score improvement requires targeted assessment. I help students identify areas for the greatest chance of improvement and then clarify what skills need more focus and what additional strategies students should try to maximize the number of questions they can get right to get that goal score.

Many SAT and ACT testers struggle with vocabulary on the exams, both with vocabulary specific questions and words used in reading passages.

Since there is no set list of vocabulary for either test, traditional memorization techniques that may work for AP exams aren't a good approach.

Instead, I recommend reading across a variety of fields. Doing this is easier than you think, using newspapers and magazines like the New York Times or Wall Street Journal and Scientific American and Newsweek offer articles on an array of topics.

To access these resources, look into free online resources available through your school or public library.

Reading just 3 or 4 articles per week, a 15-minute commitment each day, can improve vocabulary before the fall SAT and ACT exam dates.
