One of the most effective prevention tools isn't a curriculum. It's a relationship. Young people with at least one consistent, trustworthy adult in their life are measurably harder to recruit into exploitative situations.

That doesn't mean parents, teachers, and coaches need to become trafficking experts. It means staying curious, staying present, and staying calm can make it easier for a young person to come to you with something uncomfortable without fear of an overreaction.

A few everyday starting points: low-pressure check-ins, following their lead on what they want to talk about, and not treating every hard conversation like a crisis.

Coercion is one of three legal elements, alongside force and fraud, that define human trafficking under federal law. But “coercion” doesn't always look dramatic.

It can look like threats to report someone to immigration authorities. Threats to expose private information. Manufactured debt that never seems to shrink. Isolation from friends, family, or transportation. None of it requires physical restraint to meet the legal definition.

Understanding coercion this way, as a pattern of control, not a single dramatic act, is part of what makes trafficking harder to spot and more important to understand accurately.

Trafficking prevention work can be heavy. It can also be genuinely hopeful, not because the problem is small, but because the response is strong.

Every training we deliver, every partnership we build, every person who learns what coercion actually looks like is part of a community getting better equipped to respond. That adds up, even on the weeks it doesn't feel like it.

The language we choose shapes how we see one another. At Shield NC, we use terms like “survivor” or “person with lived experience” because they honor a person’s agency and not just the harm they’ve endured.

Survivors bring insight, expertise, and perspective that strengthens our collective effectiveness. They are partners in prevention and change, not cautionary examples.

When we center survivor leadership instead of survivor stories, the conversation shifts from “look what happened to this person” to “what can we learn from people who have had this experience and how can they lead this effort?” That shift helps build prevention and support that are informed, respectful, and truly effective.
