A radon test can only cover 2200 square feet, so if the footprint, or bottom level of your home, is larger than that, you will need to get an additional test done.

You should get your house tested for radon once every 2 years as well as anytime you change the way your house “breathes.” So think, HVAC work or crawlspace encapsulations.

Tommy also recommends that if you bought your house during the spring or summer get tested again during the winter because that’s when radon levels tend to be highest.

What even is radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring gas found in rock, soil and groundwater around the world. It is present at low levels in the air we breathe every day, but it can become a health concern when elevated levels build up inside a home.

Radon is colorless, odorless and tasteless, so there is no way to know how much is present without testing. When inhaled over time, the radioactive particles produced by radon can become trapped in the lungs, damage lung tissue and lead to lung cancer.

In fact, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers and the second leading cause overall. That is why the EPA recommends taking action when radon levels reach 4 pCi/L or higher.
