Before taking a device in for service, protect your information and prepare a few details.

• Back up important data if possible
• Know your device model and the problem you noticed
• Remove accessories that are not needed
• Ask whether your passcode will be required for testing
• Never share account passwords unless you fully understand why they are needed

A trustworthy repair conversation should include clear expectations about your device and your privacy.

Does every app on your phone need access to your camera, microphone, contacts, and location? Probably not.

Open your Privacy or Permissions settings and review access one category at a time. Ask whether each permission makes sense for what the app does. You can often choose options such as “only while using the app” instead of allowing constant access.

Reviewing permissions a few times a year is a simple way to improve your privacy.

As fall weather arrives, remember that temperature changes affect electronics.

Avoid leaving a phone in a hot or very cold vehicle. If a device has been exposed to cold temperatures, allow it to return gradually to room temperature before charging. Sudden temperature changes can also create condensation.

Your phone is most comfortable in many of the same conditions you are: dry, shaded, and not too hot or too cold. 🍂

Many smartphones allow emergency information to be viewed from the lock screen without revealing the rest of the device.

Consider adding:
• An emergency contact
• Important medical information you are comfortable sharing
• Allergy information
• Your preferred name

Only include details you are comfortable making accessible in an emergency. Then show family members how to find the emergency screen on their own devices.

Charging cables usually fail near the connector, where repeated bending creates stress.

To help yours last longer:
• Pull from the connector—not the cord
• Avoid sharp bends near either end
• Keep cables away from chair wheels and pets
• Store them in a loose loop
• Stop using a cable if wires are exposed or the connector becomes unusually hot

A damaged cable is not worth the risk. Replace it with a compatible, dependable option.
