We remember the heartbreak, pain, and grief we all experienced on that beautiful September morning 25 years ago.

Shane and I were just kids in middle school then, but we still remember it like it was yesterday. We remember the shock and sadness as we watched the terrible events of that day unfold. But out of the darkness, we also remember something powerful: the incredible sense of unity that brought Americans together in the days and weeks that followed.

Twenty-five years later, we hope we can remember that spirit. We are fortunate to be part of a country and a community made up of people with different backgrounds, beliefs, opinions, religions, and nationalities. Those differences don’t have to divide us. There is so much more that unites us.

Today, we remember the innocent lives lost, the families whose lives were forever changed, and the extraordinary courage of the first responders and everyday Americans who ran toward danger to help others.

Take a moment today to remember what truly matters. Call your parents. Hug your kids a little tighter. Check in on a friend or neighbor. Be kind to someone who sees the world differently than you do.

May we never forget September 11, 2001—and may we never forget how, in the face of unimaginable tragedy, we came together as Americans.
