This is how we do it here at Salmon Season! We’re making fresh dog treats for the weekend and thought this would be a good opportunity to show you how we remove our pin bones.
You can easily debone a salmon fillet by pulling out the small pin bones with fish tweezers or clean needle-nose pliers.
Steps to Debone a Salmon Fillet
• Prep the fish: Place your cold salmon fillet skin-side down on a clean cutting board. Keeping the fish cold helps the flesh stay firm.
• Locate the bones: Run your clean fingers gently up and down the upper middle section of the fillet to feel for the row of tiny pin bones. Rubbing against the grain makes the tips pop up slightly. You can also drape the fillet over an inverted bowl to help the bones stick out.
• Grip the bone: Take your fish tweezers or needle-nose pliers and firmly grab the exposed end of the first pin bone near the collar (head) end.
• Pull at an angle: Pull the bone out with a smooth, steady motion at a 45-degree angle, slightly toward the belly side of the fish and in the direction the bone naturally faces. Do not pull straight up, as this can tear the delicate flesh. If the meat lifts, use your other thumb to gently press down on the flesh right next to the plier.
• Work down the line: Continue pulling out each bone sequentially, spacing them about half an inch apart, until you reach about two-thirds down the length of the fillet where the bones stop.

We’re pretty “creative” when it comes to achieving a task here at the homestead in Appleton, WI. We call it Alaska Style! Is it sketchy? You betcha. Almost always 🤣 well, I’m trusting Abraham on this one. He’s telling me we’re perfectly safe. In all seriousness, we do try to be as safe as we can working within our means.

Here’s the color for the next siding section of the build! We’re using primed lp smart siding and painting it with our color of choice. We’re not sure yet if we will continue with this style or possibly change to a board and batten style on the porch?
At the moment though, it’s us versus the mosquitoes 🦟. And the mosquitoes are winning! Lol 😊About 4 pm each day the battle begins.
We hope you all will love the color and find it peaceful and serene. We are trying to achieve a modern mountain/homestead look. 🏔️

A much anticipated HALIBUT and Smoked Salmon update!
We spoke with Stephanie the other day, from Sunrise Salmon. They are a family farm located in upper MN, who set net and process salmon up in Bristol Bay, AK. They have a smoking facility back at the farm in MN and are handling OUR smoking for this year! Our halibut is being shipped with there halibut order as well.
We have tentatively set the second week of October to meet up for our delivery.
We will keep ya up to date as we know more info. There are many wheels in motion to make this all happen and we thank everyone for their patience.
We promise you, it will be worth the wait! 🥰
So halibut AND smoked salmon- second week of October. ❤️
We don’t have pricing yet for ya. We’ll wait and see how everything shakes out with the gas prices.

Mark your calendars for October 17th!
We have the most adorable, 🥰 young, sourdough mama who makes AMAZING sourdough creations popping up here with her DELICIOUS sourdough at the homestead store.
We’ve tried A LOT of sourdough through the years at the various farm markets. And Guys, we are telling you, THIS, is the REAL deal!
We LOVE great food.
YOU LOVE great food.
Our community LOVES 💕to support the REAL deal.
So here she is!
Her name is Sabrina and we are so honored to have her popping up for us and sharing the real deal with our community here.
Like we said, she’s a young, busy, mama of a beautiful family, who have begun a homesteading journey as well. AND we know you will absolutely fall in love with this family just like we have!
We had a blast sampling her sourdough chocolate brownie cookies, herb and cheese sourdough, and cinnamon pull apart mini loaf in the store today! Our community was LOVING the samples and many of you put the 17th on your calendars ❤️because YOU guys are the BEST!
So yes, October 17th!!!! Definitely a calendar worthy pop up! We will confirm timing as we get closer, but most likely around 2pm ish.
