Devoted teachers, a diverse curriculum, extensive performance opportunities, and musical community.

Devoted teachers, a diverse curriculum, a rich history, strong community relationships, extensive performance opportunities, a musical community – these are the distinguishing characteristics of the Lawrence Community Music School. Founded in 1874, the Lawrence Community Music School is a nonprofit division of Lawrence University and a member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education. While its primary function is to provide outstanding musical opportunities for citizens of the Fox Valley, it also maintains close ties to the community as a member of the Fox Arts Network, provides outreach and support to area school music programs, and provides Lawrence Conservatory music education students guided opportunities to hone their teaching skills. Our teachers have extensive training in pedagogy as well as performance experience. Two-thirds of our teachers hold masters or doctoral degrees; well over half of our teachers have taught in the Community Music School for more than ten years. Guest teaching artists augment Community Music School instruction with master classes and recitals. Because we believe that music-making is a life-long experience, Community Music School programs are available to students from birth through adulthood. Within the Community Music School website you will find information on private and small group instruction, early childhood music classes, ensembles for children and adults, world music opportunities, professional development seminars for music teachers, performance workshops, and summer camps. Need-based tuition assistance is available to ensure access to all of our programs.

🎻 Congratulations to Jacob!

We’re thrilled to celebrate student Jacob M., who has been named the winner of the 2026 Topitzes Family Fall Youth Concerto Competition!

Jacob will perform as a soloist with the Madison Symphony Orchestra on November 17, performing Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Camille Saint-Saëns.

Congratulations, Jacob, on this outstanding accomplishment; and congratulations to his teacher, Yuliya Smead, on this exciting achievement! We’re proud to see LCMS students sharing their musicianship on stages across Wisconsin. 🎶

🎶 Little hands. Big sounds. Lifelong memories.

There’s something special about watching a child discover music for the very first time: the curiosity, the concentration, the JOY of making a sound ❤️

Our Early Childhood Music program gives young children a playful, welcoming place to explore rhythm, movement, singing, and instruments while building a lifelong relationship with music.

These moments are a little glimpse of what happens when children are given the freedom to play, discover, and make music together. 🥁🎵

We were excited to be one of Appleton Downtown’s non-profit partners for the Heid Music Summer Concert Series in Jones Park this year! Each group was awarded money from the concerts' tip jars, and our check will go directly to our Tutti Scholarship Fund. Thank you to the entire community for supporting non-profits in our area, and to ADI for selecting LCMS!
