According to the CDC, more than 1 in 3 women and more than 1 in 6 men experience intimate partner violence in their lifetimes. About 16 million women and 11 million men say it started before they turned 18.

Those are not distant numbers. They are people in our schools, our workplaces, our pews, our waiting rooms.

The CDC also says this: intimate partner violence can be prevented.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

In 2024, 110 people in Wisconsin died in domestic violence–related incidents — the highest number End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin has recorded since it began tracking in 2000. Fi****ms were involved in 71% of those deaths.

Awareness is not the finish line. On October 22, we're putting 150 healthcare professionals from across Wisconsin in a room to build skills.

This episode tells the true story of a woman who was killed by her partner. It includes talk of domestic violence and murder. It is hard to watch.

If you have lived through something like this, only you know whether this is a night you want. There is no wrong answer. Coming is not brave and staying home is not weak.

If you do come: advocates from Golden House will be there the entire time. You can step out whenever you want. Someone will come with you.

And if this is not your year for it, that is completely okay. Help is there either way.

When a story like Kali's shows up on television, it becomes something that happened somewhere else, to someone else. It happens everywhere. Zeke was ten months old. Freya was never born.
