"Athens really appreciates small business. This is the right place, and it’s also a place that we love.”
The owners of Sunroof Coffee and Baddie's Burger House, two of the Classic City's trendiest culinary spots, are taking what they learned in University of Georgia classrooms and applying it to their business to become Athens tastemakers.

The Georgia Ready Summer Institute (GRSI) is empowering Georgia’s brightest high school students to think boldly, embrace discovery and explore how new ideas can create real-world impact. There were two Clarke County School District students who participated in this year's GRSI.
Hosted on the University of Georgia's Athens campus, teams of high school students raced to put the finishing touches on Shark Tank-style pitches imagining the “University of the Future.” Just days later, those same students stood aboard a UGA research vessel in the Skidaway River near Savannah, helping collect samples and learning how marine scientists study Georgia’s coastal ecosystems.
Throughout the week, students immersed themselves in programming focused on research, leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation and design thinking. They met faculty researchers, learned about undergraduate research opportunities, connected with current UGA students and took part in workshops built around critical thinking, communication and collaboration.

Chloe Hastey (UGA Government Relations), Linda Ford (ADDA), Josh Welch (UGA Greek Life), Deputy Chief Harrison Daniel (ACC PD), and Josh Podvin (UGA Service-Learning) did a remarkable job at closing out the 2026 Inter-City Visit for their counterparts from across the Ames, Iowa region.
During the panel discussion, each highlighted how their different town and gown partnerships are making a positive impact in our community.
From tailoring a welcome event that introduces first-years to the downtown district to helping educate Greek Life students on how to be a good neighbor to ensuring that every student in the school district gets to step onto campus, we hope that they head back to Iowa excited to deepen their connection within their own community.
We are always grateful for the opportunity to share more about our town and gown initiatives! ❤️
Are you a UGA student looking to get more involved in the community and make a meaningful impact? Well, take this as your sign!
