kinda chic to be human

It’s kind of wild that we’ve been building a business together for almost five years.

When Conner said he wanted to make the impossible ideas happen, I never questioned it. We just started figuring out how.

The best projects we’ve built started as ideas that sounded a little ridiculous.

Meeting an idea with, “Let’s try it,” instead of “That’ll never work,” changes everything.

What’s the craziest idea you’ve seen actually become reality?

Rec founders (husband & wife) Conner and Lauren moved their family from Atlanta to live in New York City for the month of July.

During that time, they also gave the Rec team 2 weeks off for the summer, in addition to their normal PTO.

Why would they do this?

Why would they stop the grind? Think of the missed revenue, employees just relaxing on their dime, not kneeling down to the almighty dollar. As small business owners, this is ludicrous right? Gotta be a mistake. Practically unheard of since the invention of the lightbulb helped usher in a culture where Americans work more than ever before.

Each year Conner and Lauren take 4 weeks to immerse their family somewhere completely new. It’s a way to step outside their comfort zone, experience different ways of living, and create memories with their kids that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. New York has always been one of their favorite cities to visit, and living there has only deepened that appreciation.

Changing your patterns and routines turns out to be incredibly productive for the brain. It forces the brain out of “autopilot” mode, promoting neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to forge new neural pathways. Ironically, Conner and Lauren will likely have a more productive year because of this decision, even though productivity isn’t actually the goal.

The goal is intentionality.

We only get one life. Do we want to look up one day and ask ourselves, What the **** happened? Or do we want to move through life with intention, make space for creativity, and connect with the people around us?

That philosophy shapes how Rec Department approaches work too.

While in New York, Conner and Lauren were able to meet people face-to-face instead of knowing everyone through a screen. They will come home with new relationships, fresh inspiration, and a broader perspective.

If you’re looking for a fabrication partner on the East Coast, remember there’s an Atlanta studio that’s always happy to make the trip.
