The Thirty-Two Hour Workweek Act was introduced this week by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Mark Takano of California. According to the bill, it is a step to ensure workers increase productivity and economic growth amidst technological advancements in the U.S.

Under the bill, states involved would gradually reduce the number of hours during the workweek, allowing workers to receive overtime pay after 32 hours and prohibiting employers from cutting preexisting pay or benefits.

Overtime pay would be at time and a half for workdays longer than eight hours. Overtime pay would be double a worker’s regular pay for workdays longer than 12 hours.

According to Autonomy, an independent research organization, they predict a four-day week or 32-hour workweek could be achieved within a decade for 28% of the U.S. workforce.

Sanders originally introduced the bill in March of 2024.
