She was a daughter. A mother. A healer. A spiritual leader. A Catholic. A woman of African ancestry navigating a world that constantly tried to define where she belonged.

And she refused to be confined to one box.

She walked between worlds.

She carried African spiritual traditions through a society determined to erase them. She understood the power of prayer, ritual, community, ancestry, and faith. She opened her home and her heart to people who were sick, imprisoned, grieving, desperate, and afraid.

Some loved her.

Some respected her.

Some hated her.

Some feared her.

And eventually, the woman became a legend.

But what has always captivated me about Marie Laveau isn’t simply the mystery surrounding her.

It’s her devotion to her community.

She reminds me that spiritual power isn’t only about what you can see, predict, manifest, or perform.

Sometimes spiritual power is being the person people know they can come to.

The person who listens.

The person who serves.

The person who carries knowledge forward.

The person who remembers.

The person who becomes a pillar when the world around them is shaking.

Marie Laveau was one of the women who made me take my own spiritual path seriously. As a child, I was fascinated by her. As I grew older, I began to understand why.

Dear Waters,

Why do we return to you when we are seeking healing, guidance, and connection?
