Nicole Carr
Journalist. Professor. Mommy. @NicoleFCarr everywhere.
SOLD OUT: A huge and heartfelt THANK YOU to every (NABJ) National Association of Black Journalists member who spent time with writers during the Authors Showcase. When I left the conference Thursday afternoon , said they’d sold out of The Price of Exclusion. Most of the books were purchased after David Dennis, Jr. led our conversation about memory, ancestry and healing (themes that are also beautifully explored in David’s book, The Movement Made Us).
Thank you to Daralene Jones and Robin Allison Davis for sending me videos and photos of all this (separate post coming about Robin’s fantastic book, Surviving Paris!!).
And thank you to readers and black-owned bookstores that always carry our work on the shelves. ✨

August is , a time to recognize the importance of equitable maternal and infant healthcare.
As part of our , we're spotlighting The Price of Exclusion by Nicole Carr, a powerful examination of how the dismantling of Black medical institutions continues to shape healthcare access today. By tracing the history of Black physicians and the policies that limited their ability to serve their communities, Carr reveals why many of today's health inequities, including those affecting Black mothers and babies, didn't happen by chance.
Add this essential read to your summer reading list and join us as we continue learning from the stories that inform our fight for equity and justice.

America's Medical History Is Missing Some of Its Greatest Black Pioneers | EUR EXCLUSIVE | EURweb | Black News, Culture, Entertainment & More Nicole Carr discusses 'The Price of Exclusion,' uncovering forgotten Black medical pioneers whose impact still shapes healthcare.
When I sat down with NBC Washington’s Jummy Olabanji earlier this summer, I had to take a moment to recognize Howard University’s
Mooreland-Spingarn Research Center . Without their Mellon Foundation -funded archive digitization project, I would not have found my great-grandfather’s Howard College (then-School) of Medicine profile, nor would I have unlocked the narrative foundation for my debut book, The Price of Exclusion: The Pursuit of Healthcare in a Segregated Nation.
A very special thanks to HU historian/head of research, Sonja Woods, for her generous assistance in clearing rights for my ancestor’s book photo. Our archives house the blueprint to confront these troubling times.

Wilmington, NC, the Dr. Hubert Eaton archives and the history of the 1898 insurrection play a critical role in my research for The Price of Exclusion. Earlier this month and immediately following the book festival in Jamaica, I joined Pamela for a book conversation at the Gwinnett Public Library in Duluth. Our full conversation is on the GPL YouTube page and will be posted Thank you Jina Duvernay for the opportunity to share this book in our community.
