A Love Song for Ricki Wilde is easily one of my favorite reads of the year. 💐📚
I loved that this romance actually felt like healthy love. Ricki and Ezra/Breeze had chemistry, tenderness, and just the right amount of spice without it overpowering the story.
What really made this book special for me was everything layered around the romance: friendship, Harlem, Southern roots, fate, family, and a touch of mysticism that made the story feel magical without becoming full fantasy.
And I loved that Ricki didn’t disappear into the relationship. She built community, grew into herself, and found a love that added to her life instead of consuming it.
Romantic, warm, sexy, mystical, and emotionally satisfying. Highly recommend. 🫶🏾📚
I went into KIN by Tayari Jones expecting a story about two motherless Black girls and their lifelong friendship. By the end, I realized it was really a story about love. What happens when you don’t feel loved, when you chase love from people who won’t give it to you, when you overlook the love already around you, and when you can’t fully accept love because it doesn’t look the way you’ve been taught love is supposed to look. ♥️
It was a great read and gave me all the feels. 10/10. No notes. 📚👏🏾

August was my biggest reading month of the year so far. 📚
I finished 15 books across hard copies and audiobooks, with Brenda Jackson taking the lead as my most-read author of the month.
The books I read covered love, appropriation, entitlement, curiosity and plenty in between.
Swipe through to see each read, my ⭐️ rating and a few spoiler-free thoughts.
Let me know in the comments if you’ve read any of these or have them on your TBR!
KIN by Tayari Jones
⭐️⭐️⭐⭐⭐
10/10. No notes. This one stayed with me.
To Catch a Sinner by Lucy Wilson-Tagoe
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great read, but I didn’t like the cliffhanger ending.
Finding Home Again by Brenda Jackson
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2
Brenda Jackson has easily become one of my favorite Black romance authors. I love all of the books in her Catalina Cove series.
The Rumor by Elin Hilderbrand
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
The drama created by misconception and rumors literally was a page turner and made me chuckle several times because I could see it happening in every day life as well.
The River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar
⭐️
This one did not captivate me because I’m not a big fan of fantasy novels. I read this one to check off a box for a Goodreads challenge.
Where the Wildflowers Grow by Terah Shelton Harris
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love the resilience of the main character as well as the love storyline. However, I do feel that the main character deserved more justice in regards to her prison sentence. No spoilers.
Love in Catalina Cove by Brenda Jackson
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is the beginning of the Catalina Cove series and sets the foundation for the characters & the fictional Catalina Cove.
Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The entitlement and appropriation from the main character had me irritated and invested from beginning to end.
Follow Your Heart by Brenda Jackson
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This crossover book got me interested in the Madaris Family Saga series, which I will be reading as well.
The Cottage on Pelican Bay by Brenda Jackson
⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
Another installment from the Catalina Cove series. I love love, but didn’t necessarily like the fact that the majority of this couples relationship was spent in bed.
Just for the Summer by Abbey Jimenez
⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

31 hours in Chicago, and somehow the Windy City still gave me plenty to come back for. ✨🌬️
This quick trip included a visit to the Obama Presidential Center, a stop at Da Book Joint, espresso martinis at the Starbucks Reserve, a little Harry Potter magic, dinner again at The Purple Pig, and a lobster roll at Hampton Social.
I even made a few new friends along the way, which might have been my favorite surprise of all.
Short trip. Full itinerary. Good food, good books, good people, and confirmation that one of my favorite cities will always give me a reason to return. 🫶🏾
I finished Yellowface by R.F. Kuang and let me start by saying: Juniper Song is one crazy-ass [BLEEP]. 😂📚
But what made this book so good to me wasn’t just watching Juniper justify one terrible decision after another. It was the way Yellowface explored entitlement, appropriation, authorship, race, cancel culture, and the stories people tell themselves when they desperately need to believe they’re the victim instead of the problem.
And Juniper wasn’t the only complicated person in the room. Athena had her own questionable relationship with using other people’s experiences as material—which made the whole conversation about who gets to tell whose stories even messier.
This book gave me plenty to think about, plenty to side-eye, and one main character I wanted to shake repeatedly. 😂
Definitely recommend. 📚👏🏾
If you’ve read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, I highly recommend reading Mom & Me & Mom too. 📚
Maya Angelou is one of my FAVORITE authors, and revisiting both books this year through the audiobooks made me appreciate her story even more. Maya narrates them herself, which makes the experience that much better!
What stood out to me most was her relationship with her mother, Vivian Baxter. Their relationship did not always look like what we are taught a mother-daughter relationship is supposed to look like, but there was still love, grace and a whole lot of complexity there.
These books gave me so much to think about when it comes to family, motherhood and how relationships can change over time.
Read them both. The order honestly does not matter. ♥️
Book Haul: Part II 📚
The classics absolutely deserved their own reel.
I went to TJ Maxx + Marshalls for candles and somehow ended up finding some of the prettiest editions of books I already knew I wanted on my shelves.
Jane Eyre, Little Women, The Raven, The Odyssey… and a few more.
Apparently I’m very easy to influence when a classic has a beautiful cover. 😂
I went to TJ Maxx + Marshalls for candles and somehow came home with 12 books. 🥴📚
Part 1: The modern reads, including several books that were already on my TBR.
The classics needed their own reel. Obviously. Stay tuned for Part II. 😂
