State Fair and more: 15 things to do in metro Atlanta this weekend The fun includes a performance by the multi-Grammy Award-winning group Little Big Town at the Fox Theatre and a Pixel Putt Mini Golf Tournament.

I was downtown Atlanta that morning, standing next to the CNN building, when the first tower was hit.

At first it felt like a terrible accident. Then the second plane hit. People were coming out of offices onto the sidewalk. Nobody knew what to do or what was happening. I remember looking at the skyline and thinking, I have to get out of here. If they’re hitting cities, Atlanta could be next.

Twenty-five years later I still think about three things.

I think about Todd Beamer on Flight 93 saying, “Are you ready? Okay. Let’s roll,” and a plane full of ordinary people deciding they would not let that aircraft reach its target.

I think about New York firefighters going up the stairs while everyone else was coming down. 343 of them never came back.

And I think about the people who jumped. There is no way to make that image smaller. They chose the air over the fire. That is still the hardest part of the day for me.

I got out of the city that day. A lot of people did. The feeling that we were safe because we were far from New York didn’t survive the morning.

Today I’m remembering the ones who didn’t get that choice.

💵 **About those State Farm dividend payments…**

I’ve seen some confusion online about the checks/payments State Farm customers are receiving, so I wanted to clear up one important point:

❌ **This is NOT State Farm admitting it overcharged customers.**
❌ **It is NOT simply a refund of your insurance premium.**

It’s a **dividend — and it highlights something pretty unique about being insured with a mutual company.**

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company is owned by its policyholders — **not outside stockholders or Wall Street investors.**

That means when the company performs better than expected and remains financially strong, the Board can choose to return value directly to eligible policyholders.

And that’s what happened.

🚗 State Farm Mutual had stronger-than-expected auto insurance results in 2025 and is returning **$5 BILLION** to qualifying auto customers — the largest dividend in the company’s history.

Think of it this way:

🏢 **Stock company:** Has outside shareholders who own the company.

🤝 **Mutual company:** Policyholders are members, and the company is structured to operate for their benefit.

That doesn't mean dividends happen every year — they don't, and they aren't guaranteed. But I think this is a great example of why the mutual structure matters.

State Farm has been around for more than 100 years, and its financial strength allows it to keep its promises when customers have claims while also creating opportunities like this to return value to customers when results allow.

**You’re not getting money back because State Farm “charged you too much.” You’re receiving a dividend because you were part of a mutual company that had a better-than-expected year.**
