Join us on Tuesday, Sept 22, at 7:30pm as we head down the Jersey shore with an all-women crew to WILDWOOD, NJ (1994), the last great American blue-collar seaside carnival town, to listen to working-class women and girls tell stories in their own words.

In attendance will be co-director Ruth Leitman, who will be interviewed and answer questions after the screening. We’ve known Ruth since she lived in Atlanta for many years. In fact, WILDWOOD premiered at the 1994 Atlanta Film Festival! Ruth’s many following documentary features (LIPSTICK & DYNAMITE, ALMA, et al) all played here at The Plaza, and her photo work appeared regularly in print, galleries, and on a generations worth of Southern indie rock releases.

WILDWOOD, NJ (1994) unironically captures tacky American culture, but moves beyond gum-cracking, big hair, and press-on nails to look into the souls of women raised on the boardwalk rides, lights, and come-ons.

Shot on dreamy Super 8 film, this beloved, hour-long documentary has been remastered and this restored version premiered at this year’s Berlinale. Made before recording technology became ubiquitous, WILDWOOD manages to coax both surprisingly candid opinions and teen sh*t-talking — and in the most public of environments: The boardwalk. It’s not only a document of a working-class beach town, but also of a time when people were happy to share their secrets with strangers on the street without worry that it would follow them around for the rest of their life. And, afterall, these women are on vacation!

WILDWOOD is a feminist masterpiece with an ethnographic eye and an empathetic soul—yet its even more of a joyride than a beachside rollercoaster! Join us!

Due to unforeseen circumstances our 35 mm screening of In the Spirit on Wednesday September 16th will be moving from the Plaza Theatre at 9 pm to the Tara Theatre at 8 pm!

This will enable us to provide a screening experience that is up to our standards and allow us all to enjoy the rare opportunity to see this film the way it was meant to be seen.

If you already have advance tickets they will be honored at Tara. If you need to buy advance tickets please go to taraatlanta.com
