A voting rights suit transformed Fayette County. Could it now slide back? 08/17/2026

I got to help my The Atlanta Journal-Constitution colleague Tamar Hallerman with some Census data analysis for her story on how the recent changes could affect county political boundaries in suburban Fayette County.

A voting rights suit transformed Fayette County. Could it now slide back? A voting rights lawsuit transformed Fayette County a decade ago. Could it now slide back in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's voting rights decision?

The Okefenokee is now a World Heritage site. Now comes the hard part. 07/28/2026

Two of the three Georgia counties covered by the Okefenokee Swamp are among the most economically distressed in the U.S. Ware and Clinch counties have per capita incomes, median household incomes and poverty rates in the lowest tiers of America's 3,200 counties. Can the new UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for the swamp help these counties' economies? I got to crunch some numbers for my The Atlanta Journal-Constitution colleague Drew Kann on this piece:

The Okefenokee is now a World Heritage site. Now comes the hard part. Those who pushed for the designation say their journey, both to protect the refuge and deliver on their vision of the swamp as a regional economic driver, is only beginning.

Census data shows Georgia continues to diversify 06/29/2026

Georgia grew by more than half a million people over the past five years, and all of the net growth was from people who are non-White. We took a look at newly released Census data last week, including the tremendous growth in the Asian community in suburban Forsyth County, which infamously forced out its entire Black population more than 100 years ago. The county is now on track to become majority-nonwhite within the next few years if demographic changes continue at a similar pace.

Census data shows Georgia continues to diversify Georgia’s population has grown by more than a half million people in the past five years, with nonwhite residents accounting for all of the net growth, data shows.
