It's World Postcard Day! Oh, and do we have a treat for you! Swipe through our nostalgic selection that showcases Underground throughout the last five decades.

Our postcards date back to the early 1970s, when Underground Atlanta was reimagined as an entertainment hub opened in 1969 by the city. The district featured a charming vibe with gaslit streets, cobblestone alleyways, unique restaurants, shops, saloons, and even attractions like Josephine Tussaud’s Wax Museum (third image).

These vintage postcards truly capture the magic of "Old Atlanta." Do you remember visiting Underground Atlanta back in the day, or sending one of these classic postcards to a friend?

Did you know Atlanta went through three names before one stuck? πŸ–€

Before the skyline, before the highways, before the city we know today, this land was called Thrasherville...a small settlement built in 1839 by "Cousin John" Thrasher near the planned terminus of the Western & Atlantic Railroad.

It was also known as Terminus, the nickname that stuck as the railroad took shape and the settlement grew.

In 1843, it got its first official name: Marthasville, named after Martha Lumpkin, daughter of former Georgia Governor Wilson Lumpkin.

But one of the men dissatisfied with "Marthasville" was Richard Peters, superintendent of the Georgia Railroad. The name was lengthy for freight lists, schedules, and shipping records, and Peters believed the growing junction needed something more distinctive.

The name Atlanta was born, inspired by the Atlantic railroad line that put this city on the map.

Underground Atlanta sits at the center of where this city's story began.

9/8 - 9/20 here's what's going down πŸ‘‡

09/03/2026

Did you know that during Prohibition in the 1920s, the spaces beneath Underground Atlanta became some of Atlanta's most notorious speakeasies? πŸ–€

When the city built the viaducts and raised street level by a story and a half, the original storefronts went underground, completely hidden from the new street above. Bootleggers and proprietors turned them into clandestine bars and juke joints where the music never stopped, even when the law said it should.

Blues legend Bessie Smith even wrote about it:

"Down in Atlanta G.A., underneath the viaduct one day, drinking corn and hollerin' hoo-ray, piano playin' till the break of day."

Atlanta went dry. Underground didn't.

Those same walls are still down here today. Come find them.

Do you know why we're called Underground Atlanta?

In the late 1800s, the streets of downtown Atlanta were alive with streetcars, storefronts, and a city still finding its footing. Then in the 1920s, the city built a series of viaducts, elevated bridges that raised street level by an entire floor, burying the original buildings beneath them.

Those original streets and storefronts didn't disappear. They just went underground.

What you walk through today at Underground Atlanta is the original city, preserved beneath the streets of modern Atlanta. The same walls. The same bones. Just a little deeper than before.
