The Tragic Irony of the Black Queen’s Legacy: The Five Princes 🖤🐉
The entire Dance of the Dragons was fought to defend the birthright of Rhaenyra Targaryen and her heirs. But the ultimate fate of her five sons is one of the most heartbreaking, poetic tragedies George R.R. Martin ever wrote.
Rhaenyra birthed two completely different sets of princes, and their devastating destinies completely reshaped the history of Westeros.
Here is why the legacy of Rhaenyra’s sons is the ultimate tragedy of Team Black:
🤎 The “Strong” Heirs: Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey possessed the dark hair of House Strong, making them the targets of vicious rumors their entire lives. Yet, despite not looking like true dragonlords, they were fiercely loyal, incredibly brave, and gave their absolute lives fighting for their mother’s stolen crown.
🤍 The Pure Bloodline: Aegon the Younger and Viserys II were the undeniable, silver-haired sons of Daemon Targaryen. They possessed the pure, untainted blood of Old Valyria that the realm worshipped.
👑 The Ultimate Irony: The most devastating truth of the Targaryen civil war is that the Iron Throne ultimately rejected the very sons Rhaenyra fought the hardest to protect. All three of her fiercely brave Velaryon boys died brutal, fiery deaths during the conflict. In the end, it was her two youngest sons—the ones who were traumatized, captured, and never meant to rule—who ultimately inherited the broken ashes of the Seven Kingdoms.
Rhaenyra never got to sit securely on the Iron Throne, but her bloodline ruled Westeros for generations to come.
Let’s settle the debate: Which of Rhaenyra’s five sons do you think had the most heartbreaking fate in the Dance of the Dragons? 👇 Drop your thoughts in the comments!

According to another account, a sailor in the crow's-nest of a Myrish galley hurled a grappling hook as Vermax swooped low over the fleet. One fluke caught between two scales and was driven deep by the dragon's own considerable speed. The sailor had secured the end of the chain to the mast, and the ship's weight, combined with the force of Vermax's wings, tore a long gash in the dragon's belly. His furious roar was heard as far away as Spice Town, even amidst the din of battle. His flight was violently cut short, and Vermax plummeted—smoking, roaring, and thrashing—into the water. Survivors say he tried to rise again but crashed headlong onto a burning galley. The timber shattered, the mast collapsed, and the dragon, thrashing wildly, became entangled in the rigging. As the ship listed and foundered, Vermax went down with it.v
