African and Caribbean nations on Friday, June 19, 2026 demanded formal apologies from countries that benefited from transatlantic slavery, as well as debt relief and financial compensation, part of an increasingly forceful push ‌for Reparations.

The demands were part of a 19-point reparations plan endorsed at the end of a three-day conference ‌in Ghana, whose U.N. resolution recognising transatlantic slavery as the "gravest crime against humanity" was approved in March despite resistance from Europe and the United States, countries which have a legacy in the sprawling human trafficking system that saw millions forcibly taken from their homelands.

The plan was adopted by the African Union and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Commission on Reparatory Justice. It does not mention which specific countries should apologise.

It calls for the establishment of a Global Reparations Fund, comprehensive debt relief and cancellation for affected countries and reforms to international financial institutions to ensure ‌fairer representation for nations in the Global South.

It also calls for the restitution of looted cultural property and ancestral remains, climate justice financing and steps to address the specific brutalities inflicted on African women and girls during slavery.

And it urges African countries to grant the right of return and citizenship pathways for diaspora Africans while committing to preserving the coastal forts and castles as memorials.

The U.N. resolution in March was passed with 123 votes in favour, but the United States, Israel and 52 other countries —including European Union members and Britain — either opposed or abstained.

Across the Caribbean, the message is getting louder.

It is not just the Dominican Republic deporting Haitians. Haitians are also being returned, detained, interdicted, and removed from places like The Bahamas, Turks & Caicos, Puerto Rico, and the wider U.S. route.

Different countries. Same message.

Our people are being treated like a burden everywhere they go.

And while we can and should speak up for the dignity and human rights of Haitians wherever they are, we also have to be honest with ourselves: no foreign country is going to love Haiti’s children the way Haiti’s children must learn to love Haiti.

This should not make us hate our neighbors. It should make us build our nation.

Because the solution cannot only be begging other countries to accept us. The long-term solution has to be creating a Haiti where our people do not feel forced to leave in the first place.

A Haiti with jobs.

A Haiti with safety.

A Haiti with schools, farms, businesses, infrastructure, and opportunity.

A Haiti our children can inherit with pride.

The world may keep closing its doors, but Haiti is still our home. And at some point, the scattered children of Haiti must become the generation that returns, invests, organizes, and rebuilds.

Not with shame.

With pride.

Not with fantasy.

With strategy.

Not because the world rejected us.

But because Haiti needs us.

Nou pa pèdi. Nou poko fini. Ayiti bezwen pitit li yo.
