The moment a flock is surprised feeding on the ground and they all seemingly lift at once, is exhilarating…I am also completely in awe of flock murmurations. To me, they are evidence of magic on the earth.” – Dorothy O’Connor

Inspired by the collective movement of bird murmurations, Dorothy O’Connor’s serene Flock of Birds features over 150 handcrafted blue birds that appear to be resting or taking flight from the trees across from the Woodruff Arts Center.

After constructing them from handmade Nepalese Lokta paper, O’Connor coated each bird with resin for weather proofing. She also tinted the resin blue to create more color uniformity throughout the flock since “handmade paper has a lot of shade variations.” Some birds even carry little pieces of natural ephemera such as twigs, seed pods, and pine cones.

Each bird is actually a combination of a starling, a swallow, and a blue bird. For O’Connor starlings symbolize community, adaptability, and transformation, while swallows represent hope and emotional resilience, and blue birds signify joy and happiness. 

Amidst the bustle of Peachtree, the graceful blue flock creates space for a quiet moment of beauty woven into the urban streetscape.

Rooted in Pop Art, Sam Lasseter’s large-scale Monkeys From a Barrel transform a classic American toy into a shared experience that recalls the memories, sensations, and emotions of childhood. 

Stroll along Peachtree St this weekend, discover the monkeys, and take a trip down memory lane!

About Sam Lasseter

Sam Lasseter received a BFA in sculpture from the Savannah College of Art and Design. He has worked as a fabricator at companies in theater, theme park, and movie industries in Atlanta, Portland, and New York. In 2015 he exhibited in a solo gallery show called Joy, where all of the art was meant to make the viewer smile and share a laugh. This set the course for his current body of work. Lasseter’s work pulls inspiration from the Pop Art movement, enlarging classic American toys and candies into hyper-realistic fiberglass sculptures. He currently works and resides in Atlanta, Georgia.

This is the last weekend to view Monkeys From a Barrel by Sam Lasseter! Part of our current series Small Moments of Happiness, his installation is one of two we are presenting along Peachtree St between 15th and 16th streets in Midtown.

A month ago, Flux Projects launched its 2026 public art series Small Moments of Happiness with two delightful installations that are UP in the trees along Peachtree in Midtown: Flock of Birds by Dorothy O’Connor and Monkeys From a Barrel by Sam Lasseter.

Today we’re sharing more about Dorothy O’Connor:

Dorothy O’Connor graduated from Georgia State University with degrees in Literature and Studio Arts. Her constructed works combine elements of photography, installation and public art. She has received grants and commissions from Possible Futures, Flux Projects, Forward Arts Foundation, Art on the Beltline, Crusade For Art, Fulton County Arts and Culture and most recently, City of Atlanta ElevateART, to present her installations as public art. 
In 2013, O’Connor was artist in residence at Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art in Nashville where she built and presented her installation, “Shelter.” She is a Hambidge Fellow and was part of the Hambidge Hive Collective in 2017. In 2019 the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia presented a solo show of her photography series, Scenes. O’Connor’s work is part of the permanent collections at MOCA GA, Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art, the Center for Fine Art Photography, Fulton County Arts and Culture, and is included in numerous private collections.

As a child, Katie DiGiovanna loved “choose your own adventure” books. Today she still views life as an adventure shaped by curiosity, discovery, and unexpected connections.

An Atlanta-based artist and community-minded creative, her experiences living, working, and collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds have reinforced a simple belief: our lives are enriched through connection.

Creativity is how DiGiovanna explores the world, builds relationships, and contributes to something larger than herself. Through her art, she hopes to create experiences that help people feel seen, connected, and a little more open to one another.
