On June 15, 1999, Calvin Johnson walked out of prison after 16 years of wrongful incarceration. DNA testing cleared his name, making him the first person in Georgia exonerated by DNA evidence. Represented by the Innocence Project in New York, Calvin became a steadfast partner of Georgia Innocence Project from our founding in 2002, and the Memorial Fund honors his leadership in the organization and the freed community.

A new analysis from Georgia Prisoners Speak, "The Board That Stopped Saying Yes: Georgia's Lifer Parole Collapse, in Its Own Numbers," shows the parole grant rate for people serving life sentences has fallen sharply, at the same time strict time limits are closing the courthouse door on habeas claims. For innocent people in Georgia's prisons, that means fewer paths home.

As the authors put it: "A board that grants five percent and a court system that clocks out at four years are, together, a simple message to fifty thousand people and their families about how Georgia understands redemption."
