⚽️ After the final whistle of the World Cup blows, the local soccer communities in Atlanta remain. We caught up with three local teams including the Roswell Seniors Soccer club.⁠

🌳 Three days a week, soccer players 65 and up meet at East Roswell Park for organized scrimmage games and practices. ⁠The group represents more than 25 countries, averages 73 years old, and counts more than 10 knee replacements.⁠

🚗 Once called “the world’s largest drive-in,” was opened in 1928 by entrepreneur Frank Gordy on the outskirts of the Georgia Tech campus. Though it started with just a take-out counter and six seats, it grew quickly, thanks in part to its five-cent hot dogs. In 1932, Gordy opened an outpost in Athens, which, as at Tech, became an essential pregame ritual for University of Georgia students. The restaurant’s carhops, who proffered meals on a tray through many a driver’s side window, became celebrities in their own right—including Julius “Nipsey” Russell, who entertained guests with his jokes at the original location in the 1940s before becoming a popular contestant on game shows like Hollywood Squares. The carhops were an indelible part of The Varsity experience until the Covid-19 pandemic forced an end to the service.⁠

Bob Horner, whose fearsome slugging power and everyman build made him an icon of the Atlanta in the late 1970s and early 1980s, has passed away at age 68. No cause of death is known at the moment.⁠

The Braves announced Horner’s death and released a statement honoring Horner, which read in part:⁠
⁠
“Bob Horner built a career out of being first. He was the first overall pick in the 1978 draft after an illustrious collegiate career. He was the first Braves draftee to skip the minor leagues entirely and debut directly in the majors. And he was the first Atlanta player to ever hit four home runs in a single game . . .⁠
