Bold Journey Magazine asked me how I built my confidence.
The real answer isn't a breakthrough moment. It starts with a list of things I was once told I'd never do again.
I've been checking them off, one by one, ever since.
The one I never went near? That's the story. And it starts with a 4 a.m. alarm.
Also inside:
What happens when I sit next to a stranger on a two-hour flight
The 30-second reset I use when overwhelm hits
Why your biggest goals aren't really tasks at all

Becoming someone you’ve never been before is uncomfortable.
Expect that.
Not maybe uncomfortable. Necessarily uncomfortable.
You don’t get to the other version of yourself without it.
Life is going to feel hard sometimes. Harsh. Unfair. But the challenges aren’t happening to you. They’re here to shape you. To mold you. To refine you.

You already know your sticky spots.
Not the places you’re stuck. Not the places you’re on fire. The in-between ones. The ones where you keep saying I’ll work on that tomorrow. I’ll work on that tomorrow.
When something isn’t working, you get to break it down and start removing the parts that feel flat, the parts out of alignment, the parts that simply don’t work.
But what if it was as simple as changing your mind?

Last night, there were two shows happening at Thursday Night Lights.
One on the field. One in the sky.
And somewhere between the two, I found myself thinking about the extraordinary amount of work, dedication, and beauty we so often miss.

When your reps stop working, that’s not failure.
That’s information.
You check in with what you’re doing every single day. If the results have flatlined, or even before they do, you look at the reps, break them down, and see what’s actually not working.
You don’t quit. You adjust.
We change the plan. We don’t change the goal.

Six days of rain kept me off the road, so by Friday I needed that run.
It started rough and the middle was rougher. My legs turned heavy, breath went shallow, the hills kept coming, and a story started running louder than my feet. This is falling apart. You're falling apart. I let myself walk half of every hill and called it proof I'd lost something.
Then I got home, loaded the data, and the numbers said the opposite. Three of four miles faster than usual. My body had been handing me information the whole time, and my brain had turned it into a verdict.
That gap between the sensation and the story is where almost everything turns.
Heavy legs, tight chest, shallow breath, none of it means stop. It means you're under real load and still moving.
Name the sensation instead of the story. Postpone the verdict until the work is actually done.
Stay curious about what your body is telling you before your mind writes the ending.
“Heavy means you're carrying real weight and still moving."

For nearly thirty years one song took me straight back to the most mortifying moment of high school.
Select choir. My solo in front of the whole school. A sweet Beatles ballad cued up. And instead, blasting through the auditorium: come and shake your body, do the conga.
The booth had flipped the tape. I stood there frozen while the whole school roared.
I hated that song for three decades. Until three weeks ago, when I got the chance to stand in front of a room and hear it again.

Some plants circle their own roots so tightly they can’t absorb water anymore.
You can pour all you want. Nothing gets in.
I found a few like that this weekend while I was repotting. Roots knotted so tight around themselves it was a wonder they were still alive.
And I couldn’t help but think about the places we do the same thing. Circling. Stuck. Standing in soil that ran out of what we needed a long time ago.
Where in your life have your roots become too bound to take anything in?

I ate cake out of a stranger’s hand.
It was a rainy Friday night. The football game had been delayed, so we ended up in a Starbucks.
What we knew was that we were waiting on a storm, waiting for a final call on the game. What we couldn’t know was that we’d end up celebrating a birthday with a stranger.
Most people would have looked away. I looked at her and said, how can you look so sad with such a beautiful cake in front of you?
Ten minutes later we were singing happy birthday to a stranger.
