There are two ways to do our ketamine program here at the ranch.

You can join as part of a retreat, staying with us for an allotted amount of time, or you can do outpatient care, coming in just for your ketamine session and returning home afterward.

Whichever path you choose, there are standard precautions to know. You should not drive for the rest of the day after treatment. If you're doing outpatient, plan to have a ride arranged in advance. Avoid the sauna for the rest of the day, and wait at least four hours before swimming. You should not be the sole caretaker of a child following treatment, and we recommend taking the full day off work to rest.

These precautions are part of how we prioritize your safety throughout the process.

What a ketamine session at AWKN Ranch actually looks like 🌾

Every visit starts with a check-in — you and a provider decide together what your dosing should be that day. Then you head to the yurts with your guide: the same person who's with you for your entire series, someone experienced in holding space through altered states.

Before anything begins, your guide talks with you about how life's been, what you're working toward, and helps you set an intention. That's the container the medicine sits inside.

Effects begin within minutes and last 45–60. Some people describe it as floaty, dreamlike. Others have vivid visuals; some don't, and that's normal too. Music does a lot of the guiding — every session moves through a playlist built specifically for this work.

Held, not rushed. That's the difference.

Meet Katie Murray, our physician assistant who leads the ketamine program here at the wellness center.

Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that's been used safely in medical settings for decades, including for surgical anesthesia. Since the 1990s, researchers have been studying its use in supporting people with treatment-resistant depression, anxiety disorders, and PTSD, among other conditions.

At our retreats, ketamine is administered via intramuscular injection under direct medical supervision. This approach gives guests more freedom of movement than a traditional IV setup.

Brain imaging research points to three specific pathways that show decreased connectivity with chronic stress and mental health conditions. Studies suggest ketamine may help support the brain's natural anti-inflammatory response, its plasticity (its capacity to adapt and change), and the regrowth of pathways tied to healthy emotional processing.
