Branching Plot Books is an innovative reading experience devoted to the power of reader interpretation and interactive storytelling. The formats vary.

Founded in 2012, Branching Plot Books is my independent, author-run imprint. It includes interactive fiction, traditional novels, a memoir, investigative writing, and reader-driven projects. Some books offer multiple outcomes. Some follow a single narrative line. Some projects invite readers to document what they find, investigate details, or take on a defined role inside the story. What stays consistent is the reader's involvement. Each project asks readers to interpret what they see, question assumptions, and choose how they engage with the material.

The Crawl Space 08/01/2026

The Crawl Space is a ghost story you steer. Three bullies get stuck in the school crawl space they used to threaten other kids, and every few pages you decide what they do next. The pages don't all end the same way. Built for readers 10 to 18.

Friend or Foe came out in 2015. One version, one ending, and I knew which side I was on the entire time I wrote it.

This new interactive edition has three endings. Five chapters in, the story stops, and you pick the winner. Chipmunks. Jays. Or the deal nobody wanted.

I had to write the one where the side I like less comes out on top, and make it convincing. You can't hand a character a weak argument in chapter five and then win with him in chapter nine.

Why Strangers, Not Friends, Build an Author's Career 05/01/2026

In 2008, I ordered 500 copies of my first book. Half went to media outlets and professional reviewers. Half went to coworkers, family, and friends. The media half put me on podcasts and the evening news. The personal half returned three Amazon reviews from 250 books, and a lot of careful avoidance in the hallway. I tried the same setup again with my second book and got the same result. The new post on The Author's Desk is about what those two experiments taught me about who actually builds an author's career.

A café worker saves a burning skyscraper. An eight-year-old runs surveillance on a vacant lot. A husband investigates his wife's ghost romance from the lake house. None of them have the training. All of them think like they do. After thirty years in intelligence analysis and investigations, that habit followed me into my writing. The new post on The Author's Desk is about why.

The Author's Desk is back, with every old post wiped. Candle Face Chronicles has its own home now at www.candleface.com, so this blog shifts to my full catalog, the writing process, and the intelligence and investigative fields behind all of it. Those three threads run through every title I publish.

The latest release from Branching Plot Books, The Legend of Mara Flores, is now available.

-----

At 5:28 a.m., Mara Flores swipes her access badge, and the Tower lets her in.

For twenty years, Mara has worked as a barista inside a major corporate headquarters. She opens the café before dawn, keeps the building running, and remains invisible to the people who depend on her.

When a sudden rent increase leaves her homeless, Mara keeps showing up to work as if nothing has changed. Same uniform. Same routine. No one asks where she slept. No one notices.

Then, during a quiet moment inside the Tower, Mara finds a misplaced access badge. It opens doors she was never meant to enter.

As rumors of a Phantom inside the building begin to circulate, a security operations center deep below the lobby starts tracking an anomaly. They aren't searching for a person. They're searching for a pattern.

The Legend of Mara Flores is a slow-burn corporate thriller about surveillance, survival, and the danger of being noticed too late.
