β€οΈπŸ™πŸ½ My heart is so full watching Lexi and Jacy grow within this work. I am deeply proud of them. Not only for their artistry, but for the generosity, commitment, and reverence they bring into every rehearsal.

ATMA Artists, Lexi and Jacy, embody so much of what the work asks of a Mover: discipline, technique, sensitivity, and the willingness to listen deeply; to the movement, to one another, and to what is still unfolding.

ATMA Moves is rooted in the understanding that technique is not separate from spirit, and that how we enter the room matters just as much as what we create inside it. I feel incredibly grateful to create alongside artists who embody these qualities so fully.

Here they are in rehearsal for β€œWhat Makes Wings”, a work about arrival, belonging, remembrance, and the communities that help us reach beyond what we believed was possible.

🦜 At the center of this new work is the red-crowned parrot: displaced from its ancestral home in northeastern Mexico, yet brave enough to travel north, adapt, and make a new home in South Texas. Its journey echoes through so many of our own stories.

But belonging is not only about finding somewhere new. It also asks us to honor the people, histories, and land that were already there.

You were born already able to fly. Sometimes, we simply need one another to remember.

β€œWhat Makes Wings” will be shared as a work in progress on October 20, 2026, through the Artist Files: Makers Program presented by Shakti Moves Dance Company

Meet ATMA Ensemble Artist: Lisa Anne Kobdish

Lisa is an Austin native, an β€œATX unicorn,” and a deeply beloved artist in the Austin dance community. πŸ¦„

One of the many things we value about Lisa is the fullness she brings into the room: humor, curiosity, experience, intelligence, and a spark of wonder. Her presence reminds us all that serious work can still be joyful, playful, and alive.

Lisa holds a BFA in Dance from The University of Texas at Austin and an MA in Dance Performance from Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London. Her path has carried her through New York City and back home to Austin, where she has performed with companies including Blue Lapis Light, BLiPSWiTCH, TY&CO, Ventana Ballet, Jennifer Sherburn, and Kathy Dunn Hamrick Dance Company.

Lisa first came to dance as an 11-year-old gymnast who realized she might be ready for something beyond long days in a stinky gym. Tap, jazz, and ballet combo classes in South Austin became the beginning of a lifelong relationship with movement.

Her guiding phrase is:

β€œI am here, I am now.”

A reminder to return to the present moment, to the body, and to what is real.

Lisa was drawn closer to ATMA Moves after witnessing Navaji’s β€œKOMOREBI”, where she found herself watching the work with childlike wonder β€” reminded that artmaking can awaken the lost or dormant whimsy inside of us.

That spirit is something we all feel in Lisa. She reminds us that movement is not only discipline, but rediscovery, presence and wonder.

We are grateful to have Lisa moving with us in the ATMA Ensemble.

An ATMA Ensemble Artist is someone who chooses to come closer to the work, to enter the practice, and to grow through the creative opportunities and guidance of ATMA Moves.

Come see Lisa in all things ATMA, including our current project, What Makes Wings, premiering as a work-in-progress in The Artist Files by on October 20 in Austin.

A little glimpse from teaching at Texas State University, accompanied by Aidan DeWitt

Before moving into my ATMA Moves material, we began with a traditional ballet barre warm-up (ATMA style) and a little of what many of us in the ballet world know as β€œthe works”: a familiar sequence of stretches, port de bras, and classical pathways that dancers across the world have practiced in some form.

What I loved about this moment was bringing a traditional structure into an ATMA Moves approach; using the barre not only to warm the body, but to invite breath, presence, intention, and deeper listening.

So grateful to have shared this space with the students at Texas State and to witness their openness, curiosity, and beautiful energy in the room. Thank you Megan Moss for inviting me! πŸ™πŸ½

An excerpt from my piece, Dwellers on the Threshold (formerly titled The UnPaved Way)

A journey down an unknown road becomes an encounter: with the parts of ourselves that wait at the edge of change, the forces that ask us to keep moving, and the quiet thresholds we must cross before becoming.

Originally performed as part of Ventana Ballet ’s 2025 KALEIDOSCOPE program at KMFA Classical 89.5 , this excerpt is a duet featuring Aidan DeWitt Aidan DeWitt and Penelope Morejon Molina Penelope Morejon Molina and live music and original score by invoke .

Grateful for this work, to let it evolve, and to share this excerpt.
