Our August Volunteer of the Month: Michelle!

A public health major at UT, Michelle has been showing up week after week as her student steps into high school, guiding her through math, hearing about her art class, her cosmetology electives, her life.

When asked why she volunteers with Learning Bridge, Michelle focused completely on her student: “I am invested in her. I want her to thrive in her class and be a part of her story as she grows up.”

That’s not only tutoring to change a life, that’s mentoring. Thank you, Michelle!

Learning Bridge volunteer tutor Lou has been showing up for her student for the past two years.

She stood in a room full of Dell employees recently and talked about what her two years of tutoring and mentorship means – showing up weekly throughout the school years, building confidence, and helping her student succeed into the next grade.

Dell’s Women in Action and Latino Connection employee resource groups invited Learning Bridge to speak at their Growing with Guidance mentorship panel. And what Lou described was not simply showing up to do homework, but building a relationship that tells the child ‘I genuinely care about where you end up’.

A few people in that room signed up to become tutors. We can’t wait for their students to meet them.

Before they left, Dell groups hand wrote encouragement cards for LB students heading into the new school year. Oh the smiles they will bring!

Whew…August was a busy month! But we’re incredibly grateful for all the partner and community events we were able to attend to share out the progress our students are making thanks to their Learning Bridge academic champions (tutors) and supporters like you!

A simple thank‑you note from a student says more than we ever could. It’s a reminder of what happens when someone shows up for them.

Learning Bridge exists because kids in foster care deserve steady, caring adults who consistently show up for them week after week.

On National Nonprofit Day today, we’re celebrating the volunteers, donors, and partners who make that possible. Your support helps students feel seen, capable, and encouraged as they work toward stability and their personal goals. 💫

Meet Sai - our July Volunteer of the Month! ✨

Sai joined this past school year contributing her time and talents behind the scenes partnering with Monica on programming projects and community outreach. Her contributions have helped more students and families in need connect with Learning Bridge academic champions.

Education has shaped Sai’s own opportunities, and she’s seen firsthand how even small acts of support can boost a student’s confidence in ways you don’t always see right away. That belief drives the care and consistency she brings to our mission.

We’re grateful for Sai’s dedication and the impact she’s making for Learning Bridge students! 💙

This is what consistency looks like.

“N” is a second grader who loves robotics, building things, and being outside. He’s curious, energetic, and full of potential. He also has ADHD and needed some extra support to find his footing in school.

That’s where LB volunteer Susan came in.

Week after week, she showed up for him. She met him where he was, kept up with his energy, and pushed him to levels he didn’t know he could reach. His foster parent said it best: “These kids just need adults who are consistent, and Susan has been exactly that.”

When a child like “N” gets that kind of steady, patient presence in his corner, everything starts to shift - grades, but really confidence and belief in himself.

One caring person for just one hour a week matters more than you realize.

Most kids are off for the summer, but 14 are raising their hand asking for help catching up in school.

These are kids navigating foster care, housing instability, school changes, and a whole lot of uncertainty. But they’re being brave and asking for help.

We especially need volunteers in North Austin and Spanish-speaking tutors anywhere in Central Texas.

No teaching background needed. Just a caring adult who can show up each week for a kid who’s counting on that consistency more than you know.
