Yesterday, I took myself and four incredible humans into hair transformations —all moving through what I like to call a “spiritual upgrade.”

Sometimes these moments are painful because they require us to leave an old version of ourselves behind. Others are empowering—a rebellion, a revelation, a homecoming, or even a tangible step into fighting cancer with acceptance and fierceness at the same time.

The connection between hair and transformation is ancient. In Hindu tradition, a child’s first haircut, known as mundan, is honored as a sacred rite of passage. Buddhist monastics shave their heads to symbolize renunciation and the beginning of a new spiritual life. Muslim pilgrims shave or trim their hair after Hajj or Umrah as they emerge from the sacred state of ihram. In the Persian ritual of gisu-boran, cutting the hair has long been used to physically express grief—and later became a powerful symbol of protest and freedom.

Across cultures and centuries, humans have changed their hair to mark the threshold between who they were and who they are becoming.

Sometimes the inner transformation comes first and the hair follows. Other times, the hair comes first—as if the mirror is showing you who you’re ready to become before you’ve gathered the courage to take the leap—or, as my client said yesterday, to “rebrand.” 😂 Thanks for that, Makenna Haynes🌞 😘

I’ve had these moments too: shaving the side of my head after calling off an engagement and cutting off ten inches when I was newly sober and beginning some of the deepest work of my life.
