Texas Storm Chasers

Smoky hazy skies continue across Texas today from the fires in the PNW. Air quality at the ground shouldn’t really be affected though.

Hurricane Celia struck the Coastal Bend region hard 56 years ago on 8/3/1970. The Corpus Christi area was devastated by wind gusts as high as 180 MPH. Many homes and businesses damaged. Let us know if you remember this one.

8/3 325PM: Multiple wildfires or controlled burns are underway this afternoon, visible in satellite imagery. Two confirmed wildfires in eastern Jack County and western Palo Pinto County in North Texas, a wildfire northeast of Kerrville in the Hill Country that's a few acres, and an unknown fire (could be a controlled burn) northeast of Silverton, southwest of Clarendon. That fire is producing pyrocumulus, or its own thunderhead! -David

METEOROLOGY MONDAY: LOOPING TORNADOES

Tornadoes can take some pretty interesting paths, including crossing over the same place twice in a loop. This happened last week (July 27) in the Chicago metro, but it's not the first time a tornado has done this. Back in 2013, a large and intense tornado near Bennington, KS, moved a total of about 8 miles during its 66-minute-long lifespan, its path forming a loop. This can happen for a number of reasons, including weak steering winds aloft that lead to a very slow storm motion, the tornadic vortex becoming detached from the parent supercell updraft, and more.

Major flooding continues on the Nueces river leading downstream into Lake Corpus Christi. The lake itself was under 30% capacity last week, so this water will lead to beneficial lake rises.

Moderate to major river flooding continues on the Nueces River, but levels on the river will continue to drop. Elsewhere across the region, significant river flooding is not expected over the next week.

We have some haze and smoke aloft over Texas today, originating from the fires in the PNW.
