The most common question we get about metal roofs is whether solar will make them leak.

On a standing seam roof it mostly doesn't come up: the mounts clamp onto the raised seams, so the array is held by the roof instead of bolted through it. Shingle is a different job β€” every mount is a pe*******on that has to be flashed properly, which is fine when it's done right and a slow leak when it isn't.

New build, all-black array, standing seam underneath.

What's on your roof right now β€” shingle, metal, or tile? 🏠

This is what a tile install looks like before the panels go on.

Every mount you can see there replaced a tile. A flashing goes in underneath so the roof still sheds water the way it did before we turned up β€” and then the panels cover the whole lot and nobody ever looks at it again.

Which is the problem. It's the part that decides whether the roof leaks in ten years, and it's the part you can't inspect once the job is done.

Ask whoever quotes your tile roof how they flash the mounts. What do they say? 🧰

Not every array goes on a roof.

When the roof is too small, too shaded, or too cut up to work with, the panels go in the yard instead β€” posts augered into the ground, a steel frame on top, and the freedom to aim the whole array properly, which a roof almost never gives you.

Bare field to finished array: two days.

Roof or yard β€” which would you rather have? 🌾

Tile is the hardest roof to put solar on, and it doesn't forgive a guess. Every mount has to land on structure you can't see from up there, every tile that comes off has to go back without a hairline crack, and the flashing has to still be working in twenty years of Hill Country weather β€” not just on inspection day.

There's no fast version of this that ends well.

What's your roof made of β€” tile, shingle, standing seam? Tell us and we'll tell you what it changes. 🏠

Four hours for the fridge. About twenty-four for a half-full freezer, if nobody opens the door. Those are the USDA's food-safety numbers, not ours β€” and plenty of Texas households spent the weekend running that math in the dark.

Here's the part most people learn during an outage instead of before one. A battery or a generator doesn't carry your house; it carries the circuits somebody picked in advance. And capacity is kilowatt-hours β€” how long β€” not kilowatts, which is only how much at once.

An outage is a bad time to find out what's on the list. Which three circuits would you back up? πŸ”‹

Rain is not a cleaning service. It wets the dust, dries it into streaks, and leaves a little more behind every time.

This array in Temple had enough film on it to write your name in β€” and that film sits between the sun and the cells. It came back with a soft brush and water. Never a pressure washer.

Nothing on your phone tells you the glass is dirty. Monitoring watches production; it has no idea what the roof looks like. How long since anyone was actually on yours? Nearest year is fine. 🧽

Tens of thousands of Central Texas homes spent the weekend finding out whether their backup actually works. If you have a standby generator, this is the week to check three things β€” and two of them you can do from the driveway.

It should start on its own on exercise day: stand outside and listen for it. Most no-starts are the start battery, not the engine β€” look for a charger light. And the only test that really counts is under load, with the grid off. That one isn't DIY.

A generator nobody has tested is a rumor. When did yours last run for real? ⚑

Mounting a battery is the easy part. Before we call one finished, three things get verified: which circuits it actually carries, that every lug is torqued to spec and marked, and that it runs the house with the grid genuinely off β€” not a simulated test, the real thing.

A battery nobody has tested is a bet, not a plan. The Texas grid gives you plenty of chances to find out which one you have.

Has yours ever run your house for real?

Tile doesn't forgive. Every piece that comes off to land a mount has to go back watertight, so the layout gets settled on paper before anyone touches the roof. Rails first, panels last β€” 24.4 kW on one Hill Country roof.

Tile, metal or shingle: what's on yours?

Answer's in the video this time β€” no waiting on a pinned comment.

Dry needles packed in under the array, right against the DC connectors, and the system was reporting a completely normal day. Monitoring watches production. Nothing watches the roof.

Call it before the end: yes or no, would your app have caught this?
