Charleston County School District is piloting the Lightspeed Parent Portal, giving parents a clearer look at the websites and apps their kids access on school-issued devices — right from home. It's layered on top of the grade-level screen time guidelines the district already has in place.

Superintendent Anita Huggins put it simply: the goal is to give parents a voice in their child's education, and bring families further into the conversation about how technology is used in the classroom.

LAUSD's new restrictions on student generative AI use took effect this week, even as the district's own AI committee continues its work, with formal recommendations not expected until 2027. That's not unusual. Policy takes time to get right, especially with something moving as fast as AI.

Lightspeed is already in place across LAUSD's devices, blocking AI tools district-wide and capturing exactly how students are using them. As interim chief information officer Douglas Le described it, "This allows us to capture their screen time, the app usage to the second" — real-time insight into how the new restriction is actually playing out on student devices.

Because when the infrastructure is already there, districts aren't scrambling to react. They're already built for what's next.
