🦍 BREAKING NEWS: First-time mother, Lulingu, has given birth!
Orphaned by the illegal wildlife trade at 18 months old, Lulingu was rescued in 2016 and raised by GRACE Gorillas. Today, she is caring for a baby of her own after returning to the wild where she bred with a silverback, bringing hope for all Eastern Lowland Gorillas in the DRC.

Lulingu is one of four female gorillas moved at the end of 2024 from the GRACE sanctuary to Virunga National Park -- the first group of Eastern Lowland Gorillas ever to be successfully released to the wild. This rewilding process was led by GRACE, Virunga National Park, and local communities, with support from Gorilla Doctors and Re:wild.

This special birth is significant for Lulingu's troop after their historic return to the wild. Additionally, this milestone is a tremendous source of pride for local communities whose efforts helped lead to the success of this project and who are invested in safeguarding these Critically Endangered great apes.

The Colossal Foundation, the charitable organization of Colossal Biosciences , launched the fund in collaboration with Re:wild in 2025. 🟢 The fund dedicates at least $250,000 annually to support every phase of species reintroduction—from releasing animals into the wild, restoring habitats for reintroduced species, and increasing genetic diversity in conservation breeding programs.

A major WIN for the Critically Endangered Pehuenche Spiny-chest Frog. 🐸
Chile’s Environmental Assessment Commission, composed of regional representatives of the Chilean government, has rejected the proposed Los Cóndores–Río Diamante transmission project in the Maule region, meaning the planned power line will not cross the frog’s only known habitat.

The Pehuenche Spiny-chest Frog is found only in the high Andes of Chile and Argentina, where fewer than 1,000 are estimated to remain. Its habitat of cold mountain streams and alpine wetlands also supports a much wider web of biodiversity and freshwater resources.

More than 16,000 public comments were submitted during the project’s environmental review, alongside concerns from local communities, scientists and conservation organizations about potential impacts to the region’s threatened species and ecosystems.

Re:wild is proud to support the people working to protect the Pehuenche frog and hopeful that this moment opens the door to a long-term, binational conservation plan for the species and its habitat.

🐸 Less than 1,000 Pehuenche Spiny-chest Frogs are left in the wild--and on Monday, August 10, the Chilean government may approve a catastrophic plan to destroy the heart of their only known habitat.

This Critically Endangered amphibian lives nowhere else on Earth except the Pehuenche Valley in the high Andes of Chile and Argentina. Now this species is faced with one of its greatest threats yet: a proposed binational power transmission project. This development would push the species to the brink of extinction.

Conservationists are not asking for the transmission project to be stopped. They are asking for it to be built where it does not put a Critically Endangered species at even greater risk. On Monday, Chile will decide the project's fate. We are fighting the clock to protect this species...

The Pehuenche Spiny-chest Frog has evolved to survive in cold mountain streams and alpine meadows. Protecting this species means protecting an entire ecosystem that is vital for biodiversity, freshwater resources, and climate resilience.
