Food insecurity is on the rise in Texas. New data from Feeding America shows that in just one year, Texas saw food insecurity rise from 17.6% to 19.4%. Children and seniors saw significant increases in food insecurity during that time.

Texas food banks are seeing the impacts with record demands. The Feeding Texas network of food banks is calling on Congress to delay the SNAP cost share, because SNAP is our most effective tool to fight hunger. For every one meal a food bank provides, SNAP provides nine. This rushed policy change could drastically cut SNAP when Texans need it most. After a year of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” Texas is seeing large drops in SNAP participation, particularly for children.

At the same time, Texas food banks are seeing huge demand for emergency food assistance. These patterns strongly suggest that new eligibility restrictions and expanded work requirements are making it harder for eligible Texans to stay enrolled. During last year's devastating Hill Country floods, Texas food banks came together to provide critical disaster relief.

This summer, Texas kids can get no-cost, healthy meals through the Summer Meal Program!

The Texas Department of Agriculture is working with community partners to provide nutritious meals in your community for Texas kids 18 and younger.

To find a meal site near you, visit summerfood.org. Families can get meals from one summer meals distribution site per day. Please call the site ahead of visiting to confirm hours and service type.

For the first time, Texas will be required to pay $709 million per year for SNAP if new payment accuracy standards aren’t met.

Texas is getting less time to avoid these high penalties than other states. States like Alaska, with much higher payment accuracy errors, will get two more years. Texas regularly met these accuracy standards before the pandemic – our state agencies need more time and investment to get back there. Since the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” passed in July 2025, Texas SNAP participation has dropped by nearly 550,000 people (about 16%), with children making up more than half of those impacted. At the same time, food banks are seeing record demand due to rising costs.

The bill also requires Texas to cover a portion of SNAP benefit costs—an estimated $709 million per year— for the first time in the program's 60+ year history, if new payment accuracy standards aren’t met.

Feeding Texas is urging Congress to postpone the SNAP cost-share requirement to give states time to improve accuracy before facing financial penalties. Some states like Alaska with the highest error rates are already receiving more time. Extending this delay to all states would ensure fairness and a level playing field, so every state has the same opportunity to improve and succeed while protecting food access for millions of working families, veterans, children and seniors.
