When Kevin Powers, MFA ’12, returned from serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq from 2004–05, he turned to poetry to process his experience—which he would later publish in the collection "Letter Composed During a Lull in the Fighting." His debut novel, "The Yellow Birds," was adapted into a 2017 movie starring Alden Ehrenreich and Jennifer Aniston. His new historical fiction novel, "Children of the Wild," is a transporting story of loyalty tested by the extremes of human existence. Texas Rowing continued its dominance this year, winning national titles in the First Varsity Eight and Varsity Four races, while the Second Varsity Eight finished as the national runner-up at the 2026 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. The Longhorns also matched their school record with 130 total points—and set an unofficial world-best time of 5:47.706 in the 2,000-meter event. J.B. Sauceda, the Texas Country Reporter, is a man who wears many hats. Pun intended. He made his first friend at UT in 2003 through a Post-it Note—and met his wife at UT through ballroom dancing. After a career spanning photography, logistics, and even some Texas Humor, Sauceda is back on the Forty Acres to finish his degree.
