For this east Austin ADU we’re working with simple volumes, raw materials and generous apertures to create a unique backyard dwelling for a local family.

A light-filled guest apartment is elevated over a flexible outdoor area used as a covered workshop or covered play area. An exterior screen does triple duty as guardrail, vine armature and shade buffer for the ‘perch porch’ that sets the stage for morning coffee or an afternoon unwind.

This one is rounding the corner on its construction finish and we’re excited to see our lovely clients integrate it into the daily rhythms of family life.

Thoughtbarn has been fortunate to work on a variety of homes at Community First Village - a microhome, 3d printed homes, tiny townhomes, a hospice home…. A new home is now under construction that we designed for the founders Alan and Tricia Graham, whose lives are embedded in the community that they serve. Their home will be adjacent to the new headquarters of the organization, as part of an ambitious 50-acre expansion of the campus. It’s the same scale and footprint as the prototype ‘family home’ we designed for this phase, but with an enlarged wraparound porch where Alan and Tricia will continue their tradition of hosting visitors, students and donors who come to learn more about the good work of Mobile Loaves and Fishes. We couldn’t be more excited to be the selected architect for a new community hub for design in downtown. Design Austin will be a 4,500sf public gathering place, exhibition space and event venue for all things design and architecture-related, and the new HQ for AIA Austin. Located in a historic 1920s building, originally built as a commercial printworks, the project is the result of the collective vision and hard work of many dedicated members of Austin’s design community. We’re looking forward to sharing more about the project origins, design vision and trajectory at today’s Design Excellence conference - and thank you to Austin Monthly for starting to spread the word about it in this month’s fall edition!
