Texas has always supported her Veterans in return for their military service. In 1946, Texas created the Veterans Land Board (VLB) to administer benefits exclusively for Texas veterans. Since then, the VLB has funded more than 200,000 Veteran loans. If you're a military member or Veteran, then you may qualify for special benefits provided by the State of Texas. The Texas VLB operates under the Texas General Land Office to provide Texas military members and Veterans land loans, home loans and home improvement loans. VLB also brings long-term care to Veterans in nine Texas State Veterans Homes located throughout the state and honors those who served in four Texas State Veterans Cemeteries. VLB Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham, M.D., is proud to introduce the next installment of the series highlighting the VLB's Voices of Veterans Oral History Program.
This week, we highlight the service of Boatswain Mate 3rd Class Gayle Bowen who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Bowen carried a strong sense of patriotism and after the attacks on Pearl Harbor, he was eager to serve. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and was sent overseas.
Bowen was assigned to the 4th gunnery division aboard the USS Franklin while also working as a mess cook. While stationed in Japan, his ship was bombed on March 19th,1945 and he recounts the experience in his VOV interview.

Come visit the VLB booth located in the GO TEXAN Pavilion at the State Fair of Texas! VLB representatives will be sharing information about benefits provided to Veterans and families.

Today, the VLB pauses to honor National POW/MIA Recognition Day.
We honor all of our heroes who are former prisoners of war (POWs) and those still missing in action (MIA).
Our hearts are with you, and you are not forgotten.

VLB Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham, M.D. is pleased to announce that the first two Medal of Honor (MOH) memorial services occurred at the West Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Lubbock last week.
These MOH services were held for Lt. Col. George Davis of the U.S. Air Force and 1st Lt. Frank Nicias Mitchell of the U.S. Marine Corps, marking the first time recipients of the distinguished MOH were honored at any of our VLB cemeteries.
Both of these brave men were honored during their respective services for their courage, patriotism, and the sacrifices that they and their families made to protect our country.

Happy 100th Birthday to U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force WWII Veteran Carlos E. Rodriguez in San Antonio!
Mr. Rodriguez served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1951, including part of his time in Normandy, and in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1966.
During his service, Mr. Rodriguez was recognized as a "Horned Shellback" for rounding Cape Horn and crossing the equator on the same voyage.
We are forever grateful for his service and wish him many more happy years.
