For more than 500 students in Lochoredome, Kenya, an exciting new chapter is underway.

Missions of Hope International (MOHI)’s school is growing fast, and students come here every day chasing big dreams. As MOHI adds a second classroom and new housing for staff, GivePower is helping with two essentials: reliable electricity and safe water.

This project will expand solar capacity and provide access to safe drinking water. Together, these upgrades will transform what an ordinary school day looks like.

Students can learn in brighter classrooms and keep studying after dark. Digital tools can connect them to ideas and opportunities far beyond their community. Safe drinking water can help kids stay healthy, stay in class and focus on the future they’re building.

Teachers will have more tools to bring their lessons to life and set students up for success. Families can spend less time searching for water and more time on what matters most. Across the community, reliable electricity and safe water will strengthen public health and economic opportunities.

This project will open new possibilities for more than 5,600 people. For a community already dreaming big, brighter classrooms and safe water are just the beginning.

“Connecting with the students at the elementary school was the most memorable moment on Trek. I felt very emotional when we left, and the kids cried and gave me handwritten notes expressing their gratitude and love for us.”

For Andrew, saying goodbye was one of the hardest parts of his GivePower Trek.

He and the team at NRG Energy had traveled across the world to help students in the Philippines facing the everyday challenges of unreliable electricity.

In the heat and humidity, classrooms had no fans to help students stay cool and focused. Teachers had limited access to multimedia tools that could bring lessons to life. And as daylight disappeared, students had no reliable light to continue studying.

So, the Trekkers rolled up their sleeves and got to work. Each day, they worked from sunup to sundown, digging trenches and building the solar microgrid piece by piece to help power the school.

And somewhere between the long workdays, the Trekkers began to feel woven into the Dinet community. Mornings started with Zumba, alongside the students. Between work, the Trekkers learned traditional dances and sat with community elders to learn pawid, the local art of weaving dried coconut leaves. And when it came time for games, everyone was all in. Andrew coached a team of students as everyone cheered from the sidelines, culminating in one unforgettable moment: A student caught an egg one-handed from 20 yards away to win the game. Andrew couldn’t have been prouder.

After seven days, the NRG Energy team had helped bring reliable power to Dinet Elementary School. Now, students can learn in cooler classrooms, teachers have more ways to bring lessons to life and the school day no longer has to end when the sun goes down.

But the week had left its mark in smaller moments, too. An egg will always take Andrew back to that game and the students beaming with pride. And as classroom lights now stay on after dark, students will remember the bonds that made this week so meaningful.

At Rose Mwakwere Girls School, students and teachers have faced immense challenges. But they have never stopped striving for a better future.

Every student needs a learning environment that meets their basic needs and gives them the tools to thrive. GivePower has helped strengthen that environment at Rose Mwakwere in two powerful ways.

In 2024, a solar microgrid began powering the school’s classrooms, internet, dorms and water borehole. One year later, another project helped provide access to safe drinking water each day.

Around the world, girls ages 5 to 14 spend 160 million more hours each day on unpaid domestic work than boys do. That's time taken away from learning and opportunity.

Reliable electricity and safe drinking water can help remove some of those barriers. At Rose Mwakwere, these resources support the health and education of 250 girls. Safe drinking water helps prevent illness and reduces the time spent collecting water. Reliable electricity powers digital tools and classrooms for studying after dark.
