“Great teachers listen to her students.”
I assumed I was good at listening to students until I realized I had no formal training.
We receive three years of reading instruction, 12 years of writing and maybe a semester of speech or debate, but we receive virtually ZERO years of formal listening instruction.
A great teacher makes it their job to learn to listen not just hear students. Accepting the fact that we aren’t good at it is the first step.
What makes a good teacher great?
Students want to see teachers learning.
Learning requires having something unknown.
Learning requires failure and admitting not knowing, but teachers are sometimes afraid to learn in front of students.
How have we failed or learned in front of them.
They know when, we are learning and when we are not.

Even when they aren’t speaking.
This is something I learned slowly, and sometimes thehard way.
