Rain didn’t stop us. Parent Coffee moved over to the Hive and we took over the outside space, and the turnout was wonderful. It was so good to see new faces next to familiar ones, catching up on what’s happening around campus and what’s coming up on the calendar. This is what community looks like at WLLC: showing up, sharing a warm (or cold) drink, and connecting over what matters to our families. See yall at the next one. Or at a Friday Meanwhile gathering. (Don’t know what I’m talking about, send me a dm)

What a morning for our WLLC community! Huge thank you to Taelor Monroe and the Austin Permaculture Guild for leading a composting workshop where we built a functional composting system for our school. The turnout was incredible.

The work day went well beyond compost. Our dads hauled trash off the property and power washed the back wall and butterfly pavilion. Parents moved mulch to the Ruby playground and the food forest and tackled the jujube forest. Coffee and tacos were shared all around, and while none of it made it into photos, it all happened and it made a real difference.

Taelor, thank you for restarting our composting system.

And a big shout out to Jacqui and Martin. Your work made this day possible, and we are so proud of what our community accomplished together.

Before circle time even started, the kids had already pulled out Munchkin and were organizing the game, walking new kids through the rules, just a normal part of their morning.

That’s what a lot of people don’t expect from this place. It’s not one single vibe, not everyone quiet and careful, not everyone loud and chaotic. It’s a mix. Some mornings are bigger energy, some are quieter, and kids move between them depending on what they need that day. The same kids who get rowdy over a card game are the ones showing up for each other in circle time, in art, in project time, in community care. Nobody has to shrink themselves or perform a certain energy to fit in here. Whatever your kid brings, big or quiet, wild or steady, there’s room for it.

We’re always enrolling. You don’t have to wait for a new semester or the end of the year. We tour year round, so come see it for yourself. Click the link in our bio or send us a DM if you’re interested.

Every day, our classrooms (and sometimes the whole school) gather in a circle. It starts small: a song everyone knows by heart, a bit of movement to shake off the morning. Some days there’s a game. Some days we talk through what the day holds. Some days it’s someone’s birthday, and the circle gets a little louder.

It’s simple, and that’s the point. Before anything else, we come together, we see each other, and we start the day as a group. That’s the rhythm circle time gives our kids, and it’s one they carry with them long after they leave the circle.

Curious what a day at WLLC looks like? Schedule a tour and see it in action.

Mentorship looks different at Whole Life. It is not always a lesson plan. Sometimes it is sitting down at circle time and really listening. Sometimes it is a quiet conversation on the walk between activities. Sometimes it is just showing up, again and again, so a child knows someone is in their corner.

Across every age group on our campus, kids are learning alongside adults who are not just teaching them, but seeing them. That distinction matters. A teacher delivers a lesson. A mentor builds a relationship, and that relationship becomes a place where a child can grow into who they are.

We believe every child deserves both.

This morning’s Coffee & Connections crew, minus a few faces who couldn’t make it into the shot. Rain sprinkled on and off the whole time and it didn’t matter one bit.

There’s something about the first Friday of every month that keeps this going. It’s low-key, it’s consistent, and everyone who shows up brings the same energy: just here to connect, no pressure, no agenda.

We talked about the summer, about the shift back into school mode, about missing people we hadn’t seen in a while and meeting a few new faces too. Underneath all of it is the same thing we’re all chasing: real community, real friendship.

Can’t wait to see you next month! October 2nd after drop off.

One thing that often surprises people about our approach is how much time we spend on feelings. When a conflict comes up between two kids, we do not just step in and solve it. We slow down, ask questions, and give them the language to name what they are feeling and work through it. This shows up in a lot of ways around the Whole Life campuses, including our peace circles, which deserve their own post soon.

Kids who can identify their own emotions, sit with frustration without falling apart, and repair a friendship after a hard moment are building skills that carry into every part of life. It does not always look impressive from the outside. Sometimes it just looks like two kids on the rug working it out, with a mentor nearby.

If you have watched this kind of moment happen at WLLC, we would love to hear what stood out to you.

Heart Maps: An Inside-Out Vision Board

This week’s theme is Inspiration, and one of our favorite ways students explore it is through Heart Maps.

A Heart Map works like a vision board, but nothing is pre-made. No magazine cutouts, no pulled images. Every symbol and word is hand-drawn, straight from the student’s own imagination, after sitting with a few questions:

⭐️What lights you up?
⭐️What do you want to learn more about?
⭐️What impact do you want to make on the world?

There’s no wrong way to do it. Some maps are packed with tiny details, others are just a few bold symbols.

Try it yourself this week. Grab some paper, sit with those same three questions, and see what you draw. You might be surprised what shows up when the image comes from inside instead of outside. Feel free to share an image of yours in the comments or keep it to yourself. ♥️

Tucked into the food forest on our campus, among the fruit trees and native plants our students help tend, there is a passionflower in full, wild bloom right now.

Passionflowers have long been seen as a symbol of resilience, plants that grow and thrive even in hard conditions. They are climbers. They need something real to grow on, and when they are given that structure and room, they turn into something this intricate, this unhurried, this fully itself. You see where I’m going with this.

That is a lot of what we hope for at Whole Life. We are not trying to grow every kid the same way. We are building the conditions, the roots, the structure, the community, so each child has something steady to climb on while they figure out who they are.

Our permaculture areas are not just about food. They are part of how our students learn. They watch things grow slowly, they watch what happens when something wild is given real support, and that lesson lands without anyone having to explain it.

This flower took its time, and it will still give us fruit.

So will our kids.
